I am trying to help my son with his heroin addiction, my other family members think im crazy for helping him, but he did go sighn up for rehab, its free through DSHS., the problem is, he is driving me crazy because of the withdrawls and then he goes and gets high.  I dont know that much about all of this, but I want to see him clean.  Well enough of that my real question is, is there a difference between smoking heroin and shooting it, will withdraws be the same?

Worried!

I shot heroin but I would think the withdraws would be the same, but every time he gets high he will be starting over with withdraws Limbo

Lafael,

I also have a son who is using heroin and I am doing all I can to help him.  I completely understand where you are coming from as a mother.  I never imagined this would happen to someone in my family, especially my child.  I really don't know where my strength is coming from or how I'm surviving this nightmare, but thank God I am.  You asked if there is a difference in the withdraw if one is smoking or shooting.  I know that when my son was just smoking it, his withdraw was insane (sweats, cramps, vomiting).  I had to put him in medical detox and it was extremely difficult for him.  He only stayed clean a few days after he got out and now it is worse than ever.

Anyways, I just wanted to let you know that I am going through the same thing you are and I believe you are doing the right thing by trying to help your son, no matter what the other family members think... that is YOUR son.  If you don't mind me asking... how old is your son?  Mine just turned 18 and started Oxy soon after he turned 17, which led to the heroin.  What a nightmare!!

I hope you do not mind intruding on your conversation but the withdraw you described is the same for shooting, I found that it usually takes more then one try to get off the ****,and that people seem to think that the symptoms (physical) should be over in 5 to 7 days, that is just not true They can last up to 3 weeks or longer (mine took about 6 weeks) and the mental is just torture. Most of us end up moving away from our connections and associates as the lure of the drug is intense. The treatment facility's I do not think they keep Heroin users long enough. The discomfort of withdraw yes is excruciating and very long lasting, that is why many of us go back. Also dealers really do not like losing customers as that is a steady income for them, all it takes for most, is to offer that free pop and that is really all it takes and they are back in business. Therefore getting away from them helps. Limbo

My heart goes out to you as well!! I have two sons one is 17 and the other is 19. There has been drug use with both of them and while they haven't done heroin they're using Oxy's which is almost as bad. As far as the rest of the family goes they need to either be supportive or stay out of it!! I know how much your heart is breaking watching your son go through this but he's the one who must decide that he dosen't want to take drugs anymore. Honestly all you can do is love him and be there for him when he falls. Hang in there and keep posting as it does really help. Many blessings to you and I will pray for both you and your son.
