weaning myself off norco

I am off of vicodin and for a week or so now I have been working on the norco.  After getting off the vicodin, my Dr. said to take 9 of the norco.  She is on vacation so I have gone to 8 a day now but I do it at night.

I am not quite sure what to do next..should I come down one whole pill each time?  and how often?

thanks, meg

I was taking nine pills a day and I am tapering off slowly..i am down 1 1/2 pills now..plus the vicodin I had been taking. I was taking 6 vicodin a day.

I understand you don't give out advice on tapering off and I am not asking you to, but I was going to...lol

My liver is okay, just had it checked and its fine.

Okay, your doctor who is on vacation knew you were taking both rx's, that you then stopped the vicodin, and were taking the norco and she told you to take 90mgs a day?

That's a little too much. We don't give taper plans on the forum but I can tell you to drop a small amount over a period of time and contact your doctor when she returns.

The reason I was taking both the vic and norco is complicated.   My Dr. took me off the vic and put me on the norco and since the pharmacy kept giving me both of them, I didn't stop them because I was not sure if I liked the norco or not...so I used both hoping to make a decision.

I didn't tell my Dr I was doing that but my pharmacist should have been the one to catch it.  Its really a long story....and I was aware that I should not be doing it.  What I was not aware of was how much I was really taking until the pharmacist brought it to my attention.

I am not sure how much trouble I will have tapering off of the norco.  This not my first time I have done this so I will just go with the flow and see what happens.  I do have another Dr's number but so far I don't feel as if I have  needed it.

Thanks for your help listening to me..it helps more than you know...

hugs, meg

IB is correct; vics and Norco are the same.
As far as tapering off, you have to talk to your doc about that. One thing that I can say is, if you've been using for a while, then you may have a hard time tapering on your own. If you find that, as time goes by and the daily amount of Norco decreases, you are having a hard time sticking to the taper plan, then you may want to have someone you trust hold your pills and give them to you, per the plan.
Tapering is a great way to get off the meds, but most of us aren't strong enough to do it. Talk to your doc. And, since she's on vacation, there is usually someone covering for her.

Hi Meg,

Do you know that Vicodin and Norco are the same thing except for the amount of acetaminophen? I don't understand why your doctor would have you on both?

We cannot discuss or give out tapering information here as it is a violation of our guidelines to do so. You need to speak with your doctor. If she is away there must be someone covering for her so I suggest you ask to speak to them.

Good luck. Let us know how you are.
