what are breakthrough meds

I have heard this term and i'm not sure what it means.

"breakthru pain is normally self limiting,lasting about 30 mins but the pain can be excruciating during its brief duration. Breakthru meds are ordered to help control the pain. These meds are absorbed quickly and produce a rapid onset of analgesia with few side effects". Thats part of what I got when I typed in breakthrough meds and searched.Hope it helps ya

breakthru meds are prescribed for people who are on a long time release medicine like oxycontin or MS Contin, etc, and pain comes back before these 12 or 24 hour pills wear off, so you are given a immediate release pill like percocet or vicodin to use for that pain until you can safely take another dose of your time release med.  I used to be on MS Contin, and used Vicodin for break through pain

Good morning to you when you get on hope you are haveing a good day one.  Yes I was on 24 hour morphine for several years then prescribed vico for the breakthrough pain.  Just so happened at the the end it took over 300 vico to cover the "breakthrough pain"
