Death from opiate wd is about as infrequant as death from taking aspirin. Sounds like you were physically dependant. Tapering for a non addict, physically dependant person is a much more doable thing then tapering for an addict but great if you can do it.

Cold Turkey can result in severe muscle cramps, fatigue, muscle aches, siezures and even death.. Find a good physician or go to one that you have established a relationship with and  explain your situation thoroughly.
Many studies have shown that a patient receiving opiate pain killers in a dosage that is APPROPRIATE for the pain will not experience any kind of a high from the drug only pain relief, unfortunately a physical dependence is inevitable when the medication is needed for long periods... I feel for those of you who are experiencing withdrawal symptoms..But there is HOPE.....it can be accomplished, in 2004 after a two year battle with an excruciatingly painful cancer, I used the taper method, ( I consulted my oncologist before attempting this) by reducing the dosage 1 pill per day per week, I was opiate free in 5 months w/o the terrible withdrawal symtoms. The key is finding a doctor who thoroughly understands these drugs and their potential dependancy.

from everything i just read about opium..you will most likely experience the same sort of w/ds as from opiates..i am glad you want to stop because i just read it can be deadly if continued..i googled opium withdrawals..same as opiates..moodiness,musclespasms,sleeplessness.etc..are you injecting it?

oh hun..i have no idea about withdrawals from opium..how long total have you taken it? i imagine that it couldn't be any worse than if you were on pills..i would think that you should be maybe feeling a little rough for a few days..I think you should just stop cold turkey and see..do you smoke it/ thats what i did when i was younger..under a glass..

yes u r right.its illegal and is never prescribed by any doctor. can u plz explain me what i would go thru when i stop it completely. i use it only once in 30 hours and as i mentioned before that i am on quite a small dose. i think it would not be that bad as compare to other opiates..methadone...oxy...etc. thanks a lot

ok...i don't know much about opium except i did it when i was a teen..i am not familiar with any side effects from it but it sounds like you are doing a good job tapering. I don't mean to sound stupid but...your talking opium..illegal opium..i have never heard of someone being prescribed opium..opiates..such as methadone..hydrocodone etc...but not opium..do i have that right?
