My 86 yr old mother was sneaking off to a doctor in another town unbeknowns to us and was on all sorts of drugs.  Xanax, percoset, muscle relaxers,  High blood pressure pills, ambian and latest which broke the camels back was she felll and was found wearing fetinol patch on her and she was and still is all disoriented. she has a fracture shoulder from falling and We have her in a rahab fior that but shes now acting psycho. Is demenita setting in or is it withdrawal from all these drugs

Nothing could  be clearer than the fact that she was probably going to die soon of a accidental overdose, If her addiction was severe enough to require a duragesic patch than that is severe pain, And the doctor who was supplying the patches should be reported to the local DEA office, As for the Xanax when you are inpatient they usually use phenobarbital for detox which could produce dementia like symptoms. You have no idea what the detox from xanax is like!. Without medical supervision at her age she could easily have a stoke or heart attack. The family has her just where she belongs. She is obviously DR. shopping as well which is a felony in most states. Don't you remember you were in detox for darvocet! Well MissB, multiply that by about 100 and that is the condition she is presently in. Please dont try and down play the seriousness of this 86 year old addicts family concern!. Grandma is an addict no if ands or buts about it. Your continuous erroneous information is getting to the level of dangerous. I think you owe the family an apology due to the fact you are completely naive to the world of addiction.
To the family rest assured you are doing the right thing, And should also get all the doctors involved reported to your local DEA office, Her medicare part D has all the records of the drugs and doctor names on anything they have paid for, I know xanax is not covered by partd unless she has the the medicare enhanced plan. Good luck to you and you addicted Mother/Grandmother.God Bless Her!-------NOAH

What kind of rehab is she in? For a broken shoulder or a drug rehab? I think an 86 yr old should be in the hospital. I dont know of any drug rehabs that are equipped to handle the problems of the elderly. This is definantly a 2 edged sword. My suggestion would be to find a caring, knowledgable Dr to deal with all problems

Also Missbecca24 she has her mom in rehab for her broken shoulder . To answer your question, Rehab is exactly where she belong . its hard for elderly people to come back after a break like that .If an elderly person is not forced to use the limb that is broke they will stop useing it .  Oh, and if she was in there for drugs , thats the right place for her too.

Rehab is the right place for your mother right now. My concern would be how they are treating the Xanax withdrawel. Many rehabs and doctors (believe it or not) aren't that familiar with the dangers and pain associated with Xanax withdrawal.

MissBecca - maybe you should read the post again. What Jan504 described was classic addictive behavoir. Where else should her mother be?

Its Jan504. Just wanted to thank all of you for your prayers. My mom , now 87 is drug free and had numerous shoulder operations but is on the mend and doing well. It was a rough road. She was in a nursing home/rehab and a good one at that. She loved it so much there. They treated her like gold. She is now in NJ living with my sister. Thanky ou again

I have read many of your post, You are by no means not  guilty of saying much worse than I have, You have even admitted it, Don't focus on the messenger I am not the one that telling a family not to be overactive to dangerous advise, Speaking of advise do you think the family made the right decision for an 86 yr old addict, Yes I can say it addict-----------------NOAH

sorry about the bickering...

just make sure she's properly diagnosed - for addiction, for her physical problems and her mental problems, if they exist.

if you can, get at least 2 opinions.

you are doing the right thing...  like i said, just make sure she has a proper diagnosis on all fronts. hopefully one is from a geriatric caregiver.

good luck sweetheart... and please post again and let us know how things are going (maybe start a new thread, where all this bickering isn't there...)  sorry about that, again.  it's not always like that.  :-/

the scary part is the amount of drugs and the age of this nice lady, seniors metabolize drugs totally different than a younger person, it says it in most information pamphlets from pharmacies and in most online information. what you or i take could be deadly to a senior. i am glad she is getting the help she deserves, she needs a responsible doctor to evaluate her and any pain she might or might not be experiencing. obviously she was SNEAKING away for a reason, addiction can strike anyone regardless of age, race or sex.
i wish your family well, and she is lucky she has a loving family to care for her properly, by knowing what she may or may not need. if she was on a HIGH dose of xanax, this behavoir is quite a common type of behavoir when going through withdrawals and she needs to be monitored very closely, it is dangerous to just abruptly stop any kind of benzos, i am glad you got her into rehab for her shoulder, but i highly suggest telling her doctor about all drugs she was on, for her age, going cold turkey from these drugs could be dangerous for her.

If you're still there, Your grandma's rehab facility needs to be fully aware of ALL the things she was taking. Talk with them about the psycho behavior. Make sure they understand she is not normally this way. Make sure you understand what their plan of action is for her. Have them explain what they are doing for each of the meds she was on. Do not think they know everything. They don't. mis-communication leads to mis-diagnosis. Be strong. Stay in touch. I am praying for her safety and speedy recovery.

First, it is possible that Jan's mother was undertreated for pain and that is why she sought another doctor.  I do know first hand how potent Fentanyl is and have seen pretty crazy reactions from opiate naieve (sic) people.  My wifes grandfather talked about mice on the ceiling.

Hopefully she was not simply cut off of her meds.  The benzo w/d thing can be scary if not dealt with properly.

Mylilman:  Methadone is an excellent tool to help ease opiate withdrawals.  It was my DOC and I was hooked, but if used in small doses for a short period of time, it will help you get through the first hurdle which is acute w/d and on to the psych part.  Just make sure you don't stay on too long.

I cant imagine putting a person that old into a rehab?? thats just me , Do you know how bad her pain is? Was she going to a better doctor in another town? It just seems really off the wall to me to put someone like that in a rehab and just because she was going out of that town to a doctor she was sneaking to get drugs? Maybe I misunderstood but thats what I got out of that ! I will be thinking of you and your mother and I hope that she gets alot better soon! I just wonder if she is hurting that bad and just didnt want to tell anyone? if her pain is that bad and now she is in a rehab because people arent understanding thats sad!

Omg!  that is so scary.  I can't believe the how doctor's can be so irresponsible......I have never heard of someone that age being prescribed meds like that and homebound.  What was the pain issue, and the xanax??  dang it!  I am so sorry for her.  I hope she gets better soon.  I couldn't imagine going thru withdrawal at that age. I hope she is in a good rehab facility.  As far as dementia--dunno--as far as withdrawal--definitely, yes.  You will know in time.  Those are some serious drugs to be detoxing off of at her age.  God Bless you and mom.

Luv,
Nauty.................
