How long does this awful depression from withdrawel go on? I am tapered off and tomorrow will be first day without any pain meds for probably a year anda half. life has been tough for awhile. My husband went thru bad withdrawels from oxycontin after using them for back pain. Long story short I should have known better. He gives me pain meds so i wont leave but its my fault i am hooked.I broke my right foot and left ankle jan 31 2009 and the doc gave me oxy codone but since i had been taking my husbands all that time i abused them. My daughter is battling anxiety and depression and cannot go thru a parent doing this to her again. i must stop. This forum has been a blessing. I went to work today and thought i was gonna crack. Made ti thru the day.Work with the public so it is tough.The with drawel feelings have started about a week ago chills etc. but the black depression really hit today. How long does that usually last and should i tell the doctor what is going on.....any thing they can do to help?

hang on, it can get better!!  first of all, go see your doctor, and be completely honest with him.  If HE thinks you need an antidepressant, he will know which one to give you.  Keep in close contact with him so if it isn't working he can adjust it.  Pain meds don't just hook us physically, depression is a very common side effect of getting clean.  your whole peace of mind as been dependent on that drug.  your brain stopped producing endorphins (a chemical that makes us feel good) when you started supplying them from the drug.  It takes your brain awhile to start producing them again.  you are going to feel bad for awhile, but keep telling yourself it will get better and you'll get thru this.  Many of us have been thru what your going thru and we are getting better, so will you!!  keep posting.

If you arent taking an AD you might want to investigate 5-HTP or SaMe for a little help.... I have used them and have had pretty good response. Either that or I have been messing with them long enough that things just leveled out. Time is about the only answer for some things. If you talk to your Doc and get an AD the other recommendation would be cancelled. Dont take the 5HTP or SaMe with an AD - - - and good luck to you...

Most people who use have depression and alot are not being treated for it. Depression is a real illness just as addiction talk to your Dr. about it and dep. can slip up on you with out you even reliezing it. Goog Luck
