Xanax is not to be taken as a sleeping pill, as it was cause nightmares not to mention the fact that the medication along with other benz's as in ativan, klonopin, and valium, Valium and klonopin have a longer half life than all the others, Once you develop a physical addiction to benzo's it is truly one of the hardest drugs to put down, YOU must do a taper and follow that plan to the letter that your MD has come of with, Some chronic benzo's addicts can consume over 15-20 1mg tablets a day, Usually ordered off the Internet. It takes months to taper off of benzodiazepines safely. If you are not having true panic attacks, or feeling that keep you a prisoner in your own house! Then you do not need a benzo to help you sleep,
Ambien and Ambien CR are also habit forming, and not to be used for more than 7-10 days, if you read the fine print on the TV commercial. Many insurance company will only for 20 per month. If you must have something to help you fall asleep I think Rozerem at this point is your best bet, As they claim it is non-narcotic sleeping aid that can be prescribed for every day use, A friend of mine has been on it for about 2 weeks know and is quite happy with the outcome, Trazodone in my opinion is a worthless anti depressant medication that is subscribed off label for sleeping it increases the appetite 3 fold, If your are truly suffering long term insomnia see your MD but try the Rozerem if it doesnt work then on the following month ask about the Ambien CR 12.5mg as a last resort--------NOAH

wantlife.....  When I was taking the OTC meds, I took them for 2 days on, 2days off and it really did seem to work for me.  You are gonna get real tired, real fast.  Benzo's help with anxiety, I won't deny that, but in the end---if all ya want is sleep, they are not the way to go.  Trazadone.....another member suggested that.  I've tried it.  It made my heart beat real fast, but it did make me very tired and I do have a heart condition, so for a normally healthy person, I can say that I would suggest it, but again, I am no Doctor.  I think if you take bendryl for a week (5 days), you should get into a pattern.  Supplement that with a noise machine and make yourself stay in bed until ya sleep.

I know it sucks honey.  My fiancee left me last night and I KNOW what it is like not to sleep, plus I just started subutex, my world is crumbling before my eyes and benedryl helped me get a nap in today.

I'll keep you in my thoughts.

maybe instead of a benzo, try something like lunesta, ambien, trazodone....?  less addicting, i believe.

How long were you taking them and did you take them everyday?  My doctor gave me some .5 mg pills and i am taking them sometimes but trying to not take them daily as i am afraid also.  I am coming off oxy and still really shaky at night still.  It has been almost 5 wks off oxy but still having wd symptoms.  I try really hard to not take them but some nights i can't stand it.  I got 30 pills 2wks ago and have taken about 7-8 so far.  Can i get addicted with that amount?

I'm not trying to be a jerk, but have you tried benedryl or wal-som to sleep?  Those two over the counter meds knock me on my rear end and put me to sleep well before a benzo would.  I have insomnia, so I've tried it all.  I am blessed because I work for myself, so I just ride it out and stay up until 8am or whenever I feel like going to bed, but when I didn't have that luxury and a 9 to 5 job, I used to take the benedryl or the wal-som and I slept like a child.

I used to be prescribed xanax (small amount)  .5 mg  x  2-3 a day after my divorce.  Once I got a grip, I just decided I didn't want them anymore and that it was a waste of money so I flushed em..... HELLO Mr. SICK.  I felt like I had the flu for 2 days, my head was in a deep fog, I collapsed once and started seeing flashes of color and boom, day 3 I had a grand mal seziure.

Would have been nice if my Doctor told me you can't just STOP taking them without consequences.  I was clueless, chalked it all up as the flu.

And I didn't even take the amount that I was prescribed half the time and I still had a seizure.  Stay awake from that garbage.  If you MUST take a benzo, I would suggest a week dose of a much weaker one.  I take Klonopin as needed and I take so little that I can just stop for a week or whatever.  I make sure I don't take it every day.  The most I take in one day is one .5 tablet.  Most days, I just take a 1/2 of a .5 tab and it works.

Hydro is correct. Having been addicted to xanax 6 years ago I know . I does help you sleep. I took way to many and when I stopped c/t about 4 days later I had a seizure. There are many other sleep medications out there that would be better. My remedy for a good nights sleep is to work myself to the point that I'm so tired when I get home I so tired that even my problems don't keep me up at night.
