Day 12 off oxys, can i use tramadol short term?

Hi Dr. Junig:

I’m on day 12 off oxycontin, a 3 year addiction. I found an old bottle (from 2004) of tramadol HCL 50 mg in the med cabinet, the bottle says take 3 per day for pain. For the last 3 days I have taken one per day, I don’t know if it’s helping, with my w/d’s, mostly mental cravings now,  I kind of think it is. I have about 24 pills left in that bottle, with no intention of refilling and no intention of taking more than 1 per day. I have read horrid stories on this website regarding Tramadol addiction,  and the last thing I want to is get hooked on these.  I am curious, do you think I could use these short-term like for the next 30 days or so without getting hooked on them.
I thought Tramadol was a “Non-Opiate medication, but an “Opiate-Like” medication. ( I don’t want to be taking opiates any more)
Do you know if that is true?
Thank you.

Tramadol does have effects at opiate receptors;  I'm trying to remember if it works at the mu receptor, or only sigma receptors.  Look it up on wikipedia;  they have good info about most opiate medications.  This early in 'sobriety' you need to avoid all psychotropic medications-- even benadryl.  They all lead you back to the same old place.

Well I have read some posts here tonight regarding the horrid withdrawals from tramadol and have decided against using it anymore. I’m going to flush them down the toilet, however, if the doctor reads this I wouldn't mind hearing your opinion after all. Thanks
