Naltrexone

by Allicat0117, May 18, 2009 01:51PM
Hello Dr Junig,

My dad is an alcoholic and he was recently prescribed Naltexone for his cravings. The dr told him he had to wait 10 days after his last drink before he took his first dose. However, I have talked to others that started immediatly. If he could start today that would be great. What do you think?

Thanks,
Alli

I think your doc is a bit confused.... you have to be opioid-free for ten days before starting naltrexone, whether you are starting it for blocking alcohol cravings or for blocking the effects of opiate agonists.   Another source of confusion:  naltrexone does block alcohol cravings, but doesn't reduce OPIATE cravings.  It will block opiates in early recovery-- I once took it for a couple months.

I double checked the PDR just now to be sure.  I have to say that he should follow the directions of his doctor (or you should).  But the current recommendation in the package insert says to be OPIOID free for ten days.

Thanks for the info. The post really was for my dad. I am currently taking suboxone for hydrocodone addiction and I have many questions for you regarding the sub. I have been taking it for about a month. Anyway, when I get my thoughts and questions together I'll post.
