Thanks, Eagle--  the hallucinogens are unique in that they are not rewarding in animal studies-- in other words, a rat won't push a lever in order to trip on LSD.  But humans aren't rats (most aren't anyway!) and humans are unique among animals in our desire to destroy ourselves.  There are also people who take hallucinogens for the 'speed' effects.  I don't know of specific toxic effects, but we all know people who used a bit too many 'shrooms or acid in the 60's and ended up a bit goofy.

Psylocib type mushrooms are not physically addictive like opiates. Some report a sort of dependance that encourage a user to keep using. The effects range from an ordinary Friday party to frankly psychotic episodes. Its a real **** shoot. And the folks that use liquid LSD on ordinary mushrooms to increase profit are a breed all their own,. They deserve a unique punishment for their immoral and harmful practices......
