Just some friendly advice from someone who's been there. I was an addict when I was pregnant. My daughter was born with a condition called IUGR - Intrauterine Growth Restriction. She was full term at 37 weeks, and weighed 3 lbs 8 oz at birth. She is "normal" in every other way and unbelievably smart. But i'm strongly convinced her birth weight was a direct result of my drug use. I continued to use my entire pregnancy (my OBGYN prescribed my lortabs, as i have severe pain issues). Also, when she was born she had withdrawal symptoms and had to have a shot of morphine. the only thing that saved my a** from having CPS take her was the fact that my "drugs" were prescribed by my OBGYN. I would not advise anyone to use during pregnancy. I have such a deep sense of guilt because my actions caused harm to her. I can't take it back, i can only live secretly with my guilt - I have not told ANYONE in my family the truth behind the IUGR. My husband knows but he is the only one. Don't be selfish like me.

Well thankyou so much for your help and advice! Hopefully not much longer until I can see a doctor to talk to him/her about it also.

As I said before, I think it is possible to taper safely. It will not be easy and you can not take most of the medications I recommend to temper the withdrawal symptom that you will still experience, but you can still take some Valerian root for sleep and chelated magnesium for mild blood pressure control and muscle relaxation. The baby will go though withdrawal with you without harm.
Good luck.

Thankyou you so much. Yes I'm currently still waiting for my first visit with an OBGYN so I'm anxious for that. I understand that this is very serious especially for my babys sake and I must quit. I do not smoke though,do you think it's possible and safe enough I could wean myself off them to stop? I would like to avoid any other medication if possible.

First of all, congratulations, what wonderful way to start a new year and a new clean life. Second, you must realize that you are not the only one in this predicament. We get this question on this forum over and over again from wonderful caring women who want to have healthy babies. Third, you must talk to your OB/GYN.  I can not promise you that they will not report you,  but they should not, especially  if they see that you are concerned and are cooperating and working with them, everything is confidential.  They treat many women in exactly the same situation and will be able to refer you to a physician who will most likely put you on a medication called Suboxone or Subutex and will over a few months taper you if you will need it.
However you are might be able to just slowly taper it off by yourself. Your baby will withdraw slowly with you without any problems. If you are able to be off of all the hydrocodones be the 20th week of pregnancy, then the newborn's meconium (stool) will be drug free if the should test it.  As you will taper yourself slowly by spacing out the pills and decreasing dosage, the baby will also withdraw slowly and safely together with you.  You need to quit smoking as well (if you do), because it leads to decreased baby weight and higher incidence of early labor.  Please see you doctor ASAP.  If you feel that you can not be open and honest with him/her, then find another one. May be this is not the right OB for you if you can not trust him/her enough to talk about such an important issue. Good luck to you and your growing family. You must take care of yourself for your baby.
