oxycodone

by delbert52, Jul 25, 2009 11:54AM
I am 6 months out of major back surgery....removal of a destructive cyst....almost totally destroyed my sacrum ...as a result the neurosurgeon had to install titanium hardware....fuse L4 L5 and S1 with rods to my hips.

Due to complications (build up of spinal fluid) I have had increasing pain...am scheduled for another surgery August 10 for reconstruction of a fluid reservoir...

For the past 2 months I have been on oxycodone (5mg) ...am now taking 15mg( 3 tabs) approx 3 times a day...usually about 6-8 hrs apart...it's the only way I can walk and function for a few minutes at a time...will this lead to an addiction?...am I already addicted and don't know it?...I only take it when the pain gets unbearable....

ok...i'm not a doctor, but will share my experience as it relates to your question.  My husband started at 10 mg per day and kept building a tollerance.  They had to increase his oxy dose every 10 days.  By the time he got into surgery he was at 150mg per day.  After surgery he got up to 400mg per day to deal with the post surgery pain.  He finally went off the drugs (which he said was like living wiht the devil for 2 months) but is a totally different person...depresseed...despondent, anxiety ridden, socially awkward, etc. (he's only 6 weeks off the drugs so hopefully he will get better, but its not looking good right now)  At 30 mg he was starting to feel withdrawls if he didn't take it, but it was bearable.  it was around the 50 mg mark where he said he was hooked and couldn't go through withdrawls.  I think if you are at 45 mg per day you are very close to a strong dependency, but you won't have as horrible of the mental withdrawls that people like my husband had.  I would be very careful about how much more you take before surgery and realize that you are going to need even more after surgery.  The higher you get, the stronger your dependency and more difficult going off the drug will be.
