weird pain

Hi Doctor,

Lately when I wake up in the morning I feel discomfort it my hands and feet (possibly in the joints). I researched this a bit on the web, and found that it could be caused from either medications that I take or from the lower back injury (compressed/herniated discs). The medications are oxycodone, Nortyptalyne (sp?), and Ambien.

Have you come across patients with this issue. The weird thing is, I have been on these medications for a couple of years now, and this just started a couple of weeks ago. Obviously I know the effects of suddenly getting off the oxycodone, and withdraw symptoms that are associated with doing this, and I don't have a problem with getting off them if that's what I need to do. I just don't know if this is serious enough to just completely stop taking everything at once now, or wait until my family doctor returns from his vacation to discuss this with him in two weeks?

Thank you for taking the time to address my concern, and I really appreciate this forum you have constructed for everyone to use. :)

Thanx for the response Doctor. I'm 39 yrs old, so I guess I'm in the 40 range for osteoarthritis. Since my first comment, I decided to quit those three medications I was taking. So far I can't really tell a difference because of the discomfort of getting off the oxycodone...(It was time to stop taking this stuff for awhile anyways....)

I do not believe that the combination of medications you are taking can be causing your particular symptoms.  Are you taking any others that you did not mention such as cholesterol lowering medications?  Another thought is that your symptoms are consistent with common osteoarthritis: morning stiffness, discomfort and pain in the joints.  You did not mention your age but this is a common complaint after 40.  That is something you can discuss with you doctor after his vacation.  In the meantime, try adding an NSAID such as Motrin (ibuprofen) or Aleve (naproxen) to your regiment as long as you are not allergic and have no contraindications.  I hope this will help and do discuss this with your doctor; but as I said before, I don't think those three meds are to blame. Let me hear from you as to what happens.  Good luck and feel good.
