Legacy of an adopted child

This is such a beautiful poem.  My Mom has had a copy of this in her drawer forever.  I wanted to share.  I know it touches me deeply.

LEGACY OF AN ADOPTED CHILD

(Author Unknown)

Once there were two women

Who never knew each other.

One you do not remember,

The other you call mother.

Two different lives

Shaped to make yours one.

One became your guiding star,

The other became your sun.

The first gave you life

And the second taught you to live it.

The first gave you a need for love

And the second was there to give it.

One gave you a nationality,

The other gave you a name.

One gave you a seed of talent,

The other gave you an aim.

One gave you emotions,

The other calmed your fears.

One saw your first sweet smile,

The other dried your tears.

One gave you up --

It was all that she could do.

The other prayed for a child

And God led her straight to you.

And now you ask me

Through your tears,

The age-old question

Through the years:

Heredity or environment

Which are you the product of?

Neither, my darling -- neither,

Just two different kinds of love.

You always post the greatest things!  What a comforting poem and probably something that those that have been close to adoption in some way really internalize.  Thanks for sharing it!  You're a gem!

What a lovely poem, and a wonderful coincidence that "Dear Abby" ran this same poem in her column just yesterday!

Aw thanks sm.  You're too kind!

There's another one my mom has tucked away too, I remember one part of it says something like, "you didn't come from below my heart, but within it".

I'll have to ask her when they come back from Florida.  I told you they just moved, so I'm sure she has got stuff everywhere.  When we went to see them before they left for Florida, she showed me a card I had made her for her 42nd birthday (I was like 10)..it was too cool.  Crazy to think I'm almost that age now...it was just too cool to see that.  My Mom saves a lot of things like that.  Honestly, I couldn't have hand picked a better Mom if I tried.  I wish I was half the Mom she was to us growing up.

Nursegirl,  I think this is the poem you're thinking of.  My dearest friend shared this poem with me - she has two adopted and one genetic child -

Not Flesh of My Flesh

Not flesh of my flesh
Nor bone of my bone,
But still miraculously my own.
Never forget for a single minute,
You didn't grow under my heart,
But in it.

Thank you for the lovely poem. It was so wise and true that I sent it to each of my brother's adopted daughters.
