Are Endrocronologists Number Crunches????

Hi All
Went for my appointment yesturday, wasn't nervous just well prepared. Any way they had labelled me before I got through
the door as some neurotic woman who suffers bad depression, thats why I get exhausted, it's all in my head. What idiots and cretins are we dealing with.
When I asked them about my low bloods oh they must have got mixed up with someone else?????????
If you weren't depressed you soon would be and by the way the thyroid doesn't cause hormonal changes???? Doesn't cause depression with pmt/period when its a medical fact!!!!
I was reduced to tears while two of them labelled me, my tears were for the fact they don't listen or care and don't like you having some knowledge and your not a lemon just saying oh yes that's right. So they have changed my anti=depressants big thrill. Imagine if someone was really vulnerable they might go & top themselves. I think they should under go a personality test, but then most of them would fail as they haven't got a personality!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

quick--because my browser crashed after I posted a wonderfully thorough response(!!)-- note on Vitamin D. I would consider myself anecdotal evidence worth noting. I consider *THOUSANDS* of consistent results more than anecdotal. Summary of what I wrote that I can expand on later when not rushing off:

1) there are 4 VERY DIFFERENT Vit D tests. The results of one might read, for a normal result, 32.60 and the same blood would be around 75,800 on another test method. From the sample technique--did they shove it in a tube with anticoagulant formula  (less accurate than straight to the lab!) or refrigerate a pure sample? Did it CLOT? That ruins samples, but guess what? Lab techs will often not think about the VERY REAL problem caused by NOT inconveniencing us with "inconclusive" and request for repeat... So the doc will honestly get bogus results sometimes because some lab techs want to get out as soon as possible and can't leave til they get your tests done... But overtime, ha. Ha. Ha. So there is a justification for having the dr's lab--trusted by the dr with techs they know and retain unlike labcorb or medtronic etc...--repeat it. You can get hospital tests (D is a VERY weird test to do, as it takes about 48 hours, in hospitals unless you are there 1.for a hip fracture and 2. For weeks if not months!!) --you have a right to your records--but anymore, the test cost out of pocket and record costs are about the same as a 3rd party is often doing both!

2, the most important part: OVER THE COUNTER VITAMIN D IS HORRIBLY INEFFECTIVE FOR THE VAST MAJORITY. NO brand is "good" for, well, ANY vitamin aside from folic acid of any brand being fine and if you *must* get calcium from a non-moo-milk source (really the BEST stuff for us, as long as there is NO rBST!), ONLY get calcium citrate, and it ***** but you need to split the doses into 3 if not 4 separate obnoxious times... Because we CANNOT absorb more than about a third of our (lower than females should take) RDA. Calcium CITRATE has--of non dairy (soy milk etc--useless aside from the chalky calcium making those 95%GMO toxic beans more milk like--soy isn't human food and it would take anyone not from a the tiny landlocked part of Japan or possibly China--and I mean ancestry at least 1k years back!--a millennium to adapt and digest as anything but "tough on the system like rocks laced with poison") sources-- the best rate of absorption IF you DO take it in 3rds if not quarters... And its absorption is 35-40% when done that way, so take the whole dose for a day 3-4 times and especially females will be better off (still, even if lactose intolerant, lactaid chewables and milk with its 85% absorption average... Much more reliable!)

**Vit D specific... The Rx is POTENT and vitamin D should not, NOT, be supplemented without levels checked initially every 6 weeks then every 12... A buildup of any fat soluble (hence taking 50k at once when 7500iu is a week's dose for normal diets that include milk or D with a natural source of zinc--the combo is important if diet sourced... All that said, body fat % matters--low fat=less room to store fat soluble nutrients, but also higher risks of acute toxic reactions. The initial point was that a tiny tip of a kid's pinky finger sized Rx pill is 50 of those behemoth chalky, filler heavy and lab-shown-NON-therapeutic OTC D pills, and while I am a relative expert researcher in this (I had better be since I am teaching it and other medicine courses, my love for pharmacology abnormal by a long stretch!!), it isn't my research, my results, it is UCLA, Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Wash U, Cambridge, and other NIH reporting top notch programs learning that a label like  "natural" is PURE MARKETING (not to mention often harmful when actually natural!) and the crap sold at stores to anyone... Well, remember the Tylenol generic scare with metal shards in some pills? It wasn't a machine breaking--they would know (as computers containing cameras run 24/7 on these machines to ensure nothing changes from the program, including shapes, sizes, weights for other sensors etc)-- it was a ground PIPE--recycled car and plumbing parts all cleaned up to give you entirely indigestible "copper" and "zinc" and so on! Coral calcium?? Huge ripoff!! It is chemically the same as Tums (with their stellar 15-25% absorption rates and extreme digestive dangers!) and comes from grinding up discarded shells from restaurants  and dead coral sold in bulk for aquariums and also for very specific machine parts (somewhat rude to take reefs, ugh)  that *should* be fertilizing soil as soil can use shells over 150 years, the right timeline for the EARTH, not for us, though, hence us pooping it out a couple days later, uglier but still mostly unaltered). Point=vitamins are 99% a huge hoax and SOME, INCLUDING  VITAMIN C, DO HARM NOT HELP... Vitamin c ie emergen-C is a PROoxidant vs an orange containing ANTIoxidants. In other words, part of our suspected earlier and female present heart attack contributing culprit set is Vit C! It releases iron--iron leeched from your muscles, making protein also break down and ketone levels rise in urine--into the bloodstream. Men&non-menstruating women  are supposed to limit iron intake and give blood why? Iron buildup and its heart attack correlation. Time to throw out all the C supps. Eat a small orange, drink lemonade (try it with Ginger and some rose water!), go to the source which is the ONLY TRUE  natural--even when "derived from" this or that, nope, you just (you=company) RUINED the nutrients by stripping the vehicle for effective delivery! Fortified foods (and spinach as a calcium rich food whose calcium we just aren't able as humans to digest by eating spinach, sad but it has blockers foe its calcium cooking won't remove)  are well intended but bogus, and those sections of alternative treatments are not just ineffective aside from economic booming for them but likewise can be harmful (take echinacea for example).

The  one definite supplement to take is any old brand of folate--400mcg or 800 if on barbiturates or pregnant. Vitamin D in Rx form-tiny green potent pills- only if your level is low and *only until it is restored as it stores up and can be harmful if too much is in you, can be meaning will be! Vitamin B12 we get from fish, apparently all "races" of folks need fish. Bioavailable and crucial. As a supplement, intramuscular injections (major inconvenience) by Rx obviously... the only truly effective supplement for B12. Calcium if a must but keep that $150 textbook chapter summary in mind. Dairy is still (NO BST THOUGH!) best--goat and sheep  milk is being researched...

The rest? Get from ORIGINAL food sources. Don't buy FORTIFIED JUNK. It won't help. It is like eating pipes and cave rock, not food... It may HINDER absorption by leasing with stomach acid and food pH levels, too, so want beta carotene? Eat a carrot. Want iron? Go spinach! Omega 3s? Here, fishy fishy (careful not to eat farmed salmon--which us all but pacific wild--or more than 3oz a month combined of tuna steaks, grouper, croaker, bluefish, swordfish, (sharks),  or black drum, or other toxin heavy fish-- info online. Trout, flounder (making fresh flounder whole is so easy and awesome), halibut, cod, haddock,  farmed catfish (whole paycheck has great east coast sources, haven't braved their west coast stores), Alaska salmon--remember fattier is better-- shellfish ESP crab and SEA scallops (bay=more junk), monkfish tail, shrimp... ... Pescatarian can be very healthy. Sadly, vegetarian will miss some crucial stuff not in plants, and vegans will be malnourished of even more. So that is even longer than the first, oh well, only covered one part, too!

I tried all my local docs - failed, and went 3000 miles. Ironically, almost all the people in my area go to the same doc, 3000 miles away.

I have since changed to a doc 600 miles away so I can drive for regular visits since I ended up not being so well, but have no regrets except that I did not go sooner (had I gone, maybe I would be working now!).

His name is Dr.Leonard Direnfeld and I am located in Toronto in Canada.  He was booked up and wasn't taking new patients and I waited 6 months and they still weren't accepting anyone.  I was on the phone with the receptionist, on the verge of tears, and she snuck me into the schedule at 6:00 am.  I will never forget that day.  I'm not sure where you guys are located but I searched long and hard till I found someone in my area.  I remember restless nights, not only because I was so determined but because I have sleeping problems with this adrenal issue.  I am 26 years old and could not bear another 20 years feeling like a 90 year old.  Don't give up and use all your resources and you will definitely find a caring doctor.  I have heard of people travelling very far just to get treatment.  That is a good option if it is available.  Good luck everyone!

Oh I can sympathize with you!!! My first endo told me I need to work out more ( was going to gym every day and weight watchers), and wrote ZOLOFT really big on a piece of paper and gave it to me. I left his office in tears!
For me I had never had any medical problems AT ALL til I had thyroid surgery... and then my life  fell apart.
But he said it had nothing to do with my thyroid, hormones, ect...
Really?? I agree it is so much easier to put you on antidepressant, give you a "magic" pill that makes it all go away.. or does it??
Hang in there and keep looking searching for answers as we all are here.

Toots,
Where is your dr?? Maybe we should come see him/her!! Sounds like a winner, lucky you!

I am in the same vein of thinking as sugarsmommie. I just try to treat myself. Might as well. The drs aren't going to search for a problem, they just want to give you a diagnosis of depressed, no matter what you go in for. Why? thats easy. Just take this AD. they don't have to order tests, or try to figure anything out.

In the meantime, we are sufferring.

What - look for a source! Pah! Not in my lifetime - only a few docs I know do it, and they don't take insurance.

I take OTC D3 - and oodles. Love it.

As for the weather, the sun is shining today, but we are getting ready for yet another hit of snow. Sheez - my bro says NJ is turning into Wisconsin LOL.

Well, I agree wholeheartedly!! The drug co's have the Dr's by the ying-yang and they're being led around by the nose!! I agree..see it most days where I work so, I know only too well what goes on with the giving of meds and their management. I don't know what it's going to take to make Dr's wake up and figure out there is a PHYSICAL cause for what's going on with all of us. It's not imaginary..wonder how many of us have had to go thru the belittling experience I have. I'm about to be so disgusted with all of it that i'm gonna wash my hands of ALL of them and figure out what to do to treat myself. I can't seem to get anyone to pay attention to the fact that i'm physically sick all the time now. I seem to have no immune system left due to the cortisone replacement. I can't get my endo here to prescribe the vitamin D that was given at the hospital in St Louis b/c she's not seen the records to understand why it was being prescribed. It's like pulling teeth to get into the endo I have. The Neuro that did my last surgery back in Dec 09 screwed my latest appt up now I have to wait another 3 freaking weeks. I'm not so much depressed at this point as being just totally disgusted with them!! Anyway, that's my little rant about Dr's. I agree with you..i had a problem in my head too!! A macroadenoma...it was all in my head!! GRR. How are you faring in the snowy weather. Hopefully it will be showing signs of spring soon for us all...think we all could use a dose of fresh air and sunshine!! I know i'm MORE than ready!! :)

Because now they have pills for it? And people running around giving them samples, lunches and nice litle doodads and pens with the name of all the nice drugs...

And fail to see the symptom in the depression, bi-polar etc - just toss the pill - 30 seconds and you are out of there, no thinking involved.

In my case, it was all in my head - mine was a pituitary tumor (or two) so hah!

When there are problems of mood, why do doctors have this tendency to ascribe a psychological cause? This is lazy medicine. My problems were "all in my head" until a very clever alternative medicine physician took me in hand. I had thyroid, adrenal and other problems.

We have to help eachother out because it seems certain doctors who are suppose to help us just want to ridicule us.  I'm not saying all doctors are like that it's hard to find a good one.  Yes naturopaths do you give you natural medication.  I was put on many vitamins and specific ones for my adrenal glands. I feel a bit calmer and my sleep is improving.  I forgot to add that I am also on Prozac for anxiety attacks and some mild depression.  Through my 10 years of taking antidepressants, I have never truly found something that got me to %100 as i'm always tired and feel like a zombie.  But I have learned of a great product 5 HTP and i'm going to speak to my doctor about it.  Supposedly, antidepressants don't create serotonin like 5 htp does and it's naturally produce by our bodies anyways.  AD's only control the amount of serotonin in our brain.  Try asking a doctor about 5 HTP but definitely don't take it with AD's or without supervision.  I hope you find someone who can help you.

Hi and Thankyou so much for caring enough to write and tell me about your plight.
It's so frustrating and upsetting. Even though you know it is physical because these professional people are ignoring and over riding everything you say, you feel like you are going mad. I do have a good friend who was the same illness and helped
diagnose me with thyroid and suggest a private Dr. You feel like here we go again the NHS only care about ranges and results, not people friendly.
Also because they have changed my antidepressant not feeling too good today,
probably a knock on effect!!
Do naturopaths gaive you herbal medicine?
Money is an issue as I am a single mum but if I thought it helped I could try It.
Kind Regards
Lorraine x

Hi there, I don't have any medical advice for you but I just want to say hang in there.  I was also given the cold shoulder by my endo and I left the office just irate.  I've been to many doctors and specialists only to be given the run around and told me I'm just depressed and that's why i feel the way I do.  I was always depressed but this felt different.  I went to my family doctor and had a lot of blood tests and scans to make sure my symptoms weren't caused by a bigger medical issue and then I was off to search for someone who could treat me by my symptoms.  I am now seeing a doctor who is conventional/naturopathic and it feels good to talk to someone who doesn't look at you like you are crazy.  I am just starting treatment on my adrenal glands with some supplements and have felt a difference!  Do you have any naturopaths in the area that you can see?
