Young Adult with CP and LD--need vocational guidance

by itsmethere, May 14, 2009 08:47PM
I meant to post in the Learning Disability forum but it's full so I am posting here.

I am a 24 year old female who has cerebral palsy (spastic diplegia) from complications of premature birth.  I always had difficulties in school especially in subjects that require reading and synthesizing information (English and History) as opposed to more linear subjects like Science and Math.  I always got good grades in school because of great motivation and effort and thus was never tested for learning disabilities.  (However, homework always took hours).  I managed to get into a prestigious college and SAT scores were 1350 (680V, 670M) without accomodations.  However, college was just so above my head and I struggled so badly that I decided to get tested for LD in 2005 at the end of a sophomore year of college at age 20.  So what insights can you offer about my scores?  What careers do you think I would be good at and enjoy?  It's been almost two years that I graduated from college and still don't have a job.  It seems like most jobs are over my head and since my lack of ability shows on interviews, I don't get the jobs.  I am being helped by my state's Voc. Rehab. but so far to no avail.

Also, could you recommend a good vocational psychologist who is experienced in disability issues.  I live in NYC.
(The Voc. Rehab. did send me for Diagnostic Voc. Eval. but it's very superficial and they just put a genetic category like a clerical worker).
