No one wants to go to AA (at least I didn't), but most are glad they did get into the program because it works. If you want to stay off alcohol, it's your best bet and it's free. You might look into NA as well.

People with substance abuse issues are highly likely to go back to using if they don't hang out with a support group of some kind on a very regular basis.

I have almost 8 months sober and for me what happened was is this,I went to a 21 day rehab and I learned and heard things there that changed my thinking. The first one was I hated myself and I didnt think I had any worth in life.So when I hated myself I wore a mask and didnt act like myself, even when I was sober I put on an act for that acceptance so I could feel good about myself. The first night I was there the guy said"Be yourself and if others dont like that or accept that then they dont like you so EFFF THEM!!!!" The self worth I never seen before I started seeing because I  had a girlfriend and her two daughters and to them I am important, that showed me I have self worth. People that know me are asking me how I am doing it cause I never been like this and I tell em" It is moment by moment, never look ahead and stay in your time not even thinking about 30 minutes ahead. Any addict or alcoholic is scared over say a few days it gets stronger. Moment by moment. Just like a pitcher he cant hang on giving up a homer or a quarterback thinking of his last interception you have to take it pitch by pitch, pass by pass and in our case moment by moment never think back and never think ahead.

Another suggestion. Stop hanging out with alcoholics or addicts. They are triggers.

Some alcoholics are hypoglycemic. Have you ever had your blood sugar level tested? One sign of this problem is that when the hypoglycemic alcoholic stops drinking he turns to sweets. Or, in general, he has a sweet tooth..

Hello!!

I understand what you mean, it is very difficult to kill bad habits, even the ones that hurt us or the people around us.
It's like, we wish for a lot but what we can do is so little. Or, we give our best, or we think we give or best but the results are so poor.
I think you have to be very carefull and you cannot negotiate with temptation because there's no way you're going to win, at least not right now. So, I guess, the best thing for you to do, is ackowledge how fragil you are, this is not bad - not in this case.
And the other thing that works for me is praying. I don't know if you believe in God, and if you don't I am sorry, I don't mean to impose my believes, but you may want to try this:
Behold me, O my God, at Your feet! I do not deserve mercy, but O my Redeemer, the blood with You have shed for me encourages me and obliges me to hope for it. How often I have offended You, repented, and yet have I again fallen into the same sin. O my God, I wish to amend, and in order to be faithful to You, I will place all my confidence in You. I will, whenever I am tempted, instantly have recourse to You. Until now, I have trusted in my own promises and resolutions and have neglected to recommend myself to You in my temptations. This has been the cause of my repeated failures. From this day forward, be You, O Lord, my strength, and this shall I be able to do all things, for “I can do all things in Him who strengthens me.” Amen.

I hope you can overcome this problem, for you and your child.

One common thread that we all have whether its the bottle of booze or a bottle of pills and that commonality is "CHOICE".  We ALL have the freedom of choice.  When we want something bad enough we will do it.  Will it be hard?  Absolutely!  Maybe the hardest thing we have ever done.  But the good thing is, we dont have to lift the bottle for the drink, or open the pill container for a pill.  If we know where we are weak, find a way to stay away from those areas or those people until we have control.  Drinking alcohol tends to make us loose our focus and think lesser of the consequenses.  Be careful.  Stay busy with positive things.  You have a son and a job.  Think about that and how you can influence your son in a positive manner.  Stay strong!!

just MHO,
