Step Ten

Step Ten

"Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it."
Taken from The Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions  pg88

I like to think of this step as a condensed version of steps 4 through 9.  The main difference for me being that steps 4-9 were for the major house cleaning.  Getting out all the stuff that had built up over the course of a lifetime.  Step Ten for me is like a maintenance cleaning.  Picking up the dirty clothes, doing the dishes, vacuuming etc.  All the daily cleaning that is required to keep the place in decent order.  I wake up in the morning and check to make sure everything is working and see what kind of mood I'm in.  I quick check to see if there are any resentments or if I'm grateful for anything.  I ask for help for all those that have to deal with me throughout my day and then proceed to get my butt in gear and get moving.  As the day goes on I come into contact with many people.  I do spot check inventories.  Usually if I have harmed someone it is pretty obvious and I do my best to correct it as soon as possible.  Not only does this help keep my house clean but it may help someone else keep there's clean as well.  Just because I have a program doesn't mean I am perfect or better than anybody else.  I still make mistakes and I can still be an a-hole.  The difference today is that I am willing to admit when I am wrong and take action to make it better.  This manner of living is far better for me than drinking and drugging to squash the guilt and anger.  Thanks for letting me share.
