I would keep the 12 steps close to you, and meditate over them , over and over. Hopefully you will find a certain peace, that you are not going this alone. Having a big book there for you to read, would also be beneficial, there are many stories that may be of some comfort to you. Understanding the full extent of the program, early on, will give you a sense of belonging to your after care program. Is there anyone that can run into a meeting and purchase you this reading material for you while you detox?

Julia thank you for this....."Detox take place in a hospital  under medical supervision. You need to be on medication such as benzodiazapines to prevent seizures"  You must have a plan in the event of a seizure, are you alone? or is there someone there that could stay with you to help you through this detox? I would certainly do the benzo's suggested in the Thomas Recipe.  Don't rush into this without being fully prepared. As was earlier stated, alcoholic detox can be deadly. I wish you the very best in your detox, and your aftercare plans. LIz

Oh, also I wanted to wish you the best, not scare you!  You're doing the right thing, and it's good to know that people like you are quitting every day-- it gives me hope that we can all do it!

Yes, go to a family doctor.  I did this a few weeks ago, (albeit after I had a withdrawal seizure--- so go ASAP!) and she gave me a tapering dose of Ativan as a detox.  My seizure happened on 3rd or 4th day after I quit.  Also, they'll lecture you about AA, but just nod and take the pills lol.

Hello, I think a family doctor would be ok as a first point of call he can then referr you to the more specialist help that you will require. When I stopped drinking I had a home detox which involved taking Librium for 5 days to ward off the dangerous withdrawals. I did this through my Community Drug and Alcohol Centre which I was refered to by my GP. I also have my own counsellor and attend a mutual suppport group. Can I just stress the importance of support and after care as this thing is very very hard to do alone! Do you have any support networks set up?

Wishing you luck and success and keep posting :-)

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
I am so glad that you have finally come to a realization that alcohol abuse is truly poisonous to your body.  It leaches vitamins and nutrients out of you and damages your central nervous system. That is why I always suggest that alcohol detox take place in a hospital  under medical supervision. You need to be on medication such as benzodiazapines to prevent seizures and have IV vitamin supplementation, especially thiamine, among others. Please do not take this advise lightly. Talk to your doctor and see what s/he can arrange for you. It does not take long, but alcohol detox is the only one that can actually be deadly if not done right.
Good luck to you and stay well.
