an ethical question for you all

by sleeplesss, Feb 07, 2008 07:29AM
My brother is an alcoholic.  We both go to the same dr.  He recently called me and told me he was going to kill himself by taking 10 klonipin (for anxiety).  He was drunk at the time.  I of course called his wife and told her that suicide prevention said to call the police, but she chose not to, and, today he is still alive.  Maybe next time he won't be.
The question is this:  He has lied to the dr. and told the dr. he doesn't drink anymore.  This dr prescribes the klonipan, which he would'nt, if he knew my brother drank so much.  Should I tell this dr. when I go there on Monday?  I'm really torn about what the right thing to do is.

u can tell the doctor..he can listen but not comment due 2 HIPPA laws of privacy/confidentiality.

Yes, I understand fully the HIPPA laws.  I'm just wondering SHOULD I say anything?  I realize he cannot comment to me about it at all.  I'm worried about my brother's life.

yes u should say what u want for if ur brother does succeed..even accidentally in overdosing and possibly would kill self u will feel terrible for not saying anything.....and so common alcoholics lie to doctors or doctors don't ask them how much they drink and give them addictive meds that can harm them.u r free to speak ur concerns!Hope u do!
