cirrhosis question

Hi,
I am wondering if cirrhosis could possibly be the or one of the causes of my unintentional weight loss.  I would say I drink more than a "moderate" amount (3-4 beers/night usually) but less than "heavy alcohol abusers" (hard liquor, blackouts, etc.).  I am only 29 years old and admit the amount of beer I drink is not healthy, but I am around people that drink a lot more than I do.

I do also frequently take an over the counter sleep aid to help me sleep after consuming beer.  Does anyone know if this could also be aiding in a malabsorption?  Thank you for your thoughts,

Evan

No way to answer this question without seeing a doctor.  Usually, they start with bloodwork.  After that, you can get a scan of your liver, in the form of an Ultrasound or a CT scan.  I've heard the CT scan gives better overall resolution, but I'm no doctor.

I had a CT scan and it showed fatty infiltration but no cirrhosis.  It's always good to know where you stand, and I would encourage you to get tested.

Michelle, Hep C and alcohol are a very bad mixture, so please....go to the doctor TODAY.  Tell the doc you need to stop drinking (he/she will agree).  You'd be surprised at how much health you can gain by treating yourself well for a change!

Hello. Either condition will prolly become much worse, even life threatening with continued drinking. Pancreatitis can actually improve if one stops drinking in time. But I watched my dad die from it over a 2 week period. It is a slow, agonizing, and horrible way to go. If you want to get off the path you are on, all you need to take the first step is willingness. If you have a desire to stop killing yourself, there is help available both here and through other resources. There are many who will be glad to aid you, and can attest to the fact that it can open the door to a life that is well worth the effort! Take care, GM

you must quit using alchohol if you can because if you have hep c you are in danger. It,s a silent killer and one day you will remember this message.

hi. if there is a possibility of cirrhosis or other serious problem, you should seek the advice of a competent physician who would likely order simple blood tests to begin with. otc sleep aids, that also contain acetaminophen such as tylenol pm, can also damage the liver. when combined with excessive alcohol use, the effects can be exponential. weight loss can be caused by a multitude of conditions, and many of these are most successfully treated in their early stages---------go to the doctor.  take care,   gm
