help with compliance

Hello. A friend is in a recovery based residential program, and one of the residents is frequently exhibiting an odor of alcohol. This individual is also suffering from cirrhosis which I have noted as a possible cause (according to another post). This individual has been given  saliva alcohol tests on several occasions which have all been negative. Is it possible for someone to falsify this type of test? Please advise-someone's recovery may be at stake.

Yes - if that person ingested a hard candy or mint such as peppermint (something that has sugar alcohol in it!) then it possibly could but usually not. (the test is only semi-quantitative)
How long has the person been sober?  Alcohol can take up to one year to clear the body and if a person has cirrohsis then that person is literally "soaked" in it!  It could just be coming from his pores (as weird as that sounds).  Did you ever have a wild drinking night, maybe even didn't go to sleep but felt "sobered up" and hadn't had a drink in a couple of hours but still had someone comment that you "smelled like alcohol"?  That is the same principle.  I was in rehab with LOTS of them.  Some of them still smelled like liquor after 2 weeks in rehab!  One man, who had "wet brain", reaked of beer constantly!
Hope all goes well..
