Hi Clown,
Maybe it is time for an INTERVENTION! Counselor or even AA can answer questions about this and help with the meeting. Can you live with shuting your eyes uintil you hear she is dead? At least this way you have tried, then it is up to her--as getting sober always is.

Insurance companies have been less inclined to pay full coverage for inpatient stays due to high relapse rates and ppl going AMA.I understand this.....it ruins it for those who are comitted to getting sober/clean.I've been watching this become quite the trend since @ 2000....with inpatient units closing and going with shorter lengths of stays due to the high costs and lack of success to show for it!

Ohh, I see. Yes, AMA is a very daunting thing when it comes to inpatient care. So is insurance for that matter, I wwnt to a place called Rosewood Ranch and at the end of meals they would have a roses and thorns part and most people would say thorns to insurance...

To get someone declared mentally incompetent is quite the legal ordeal, one has to complete papers with their county Probate Court and the process can take up to 2 months at a minimum. You can court order someone to do inpatient, but the question is who pays for it?if someone has health care insurance and they walk out of the program AMA-against medical advice, the insurance company can refuse to pay their portion of the bill.

Can't she be legally declared unfit or mentally disturbed and get court ordered to do inpatient? Hmmm

Your best bet certainly is to take her to the hospital to get treatment. Unfortunately it is up to her once she gets there whether she stays. My father died of alcoholism and it was a constant battle of me trying to save him and him refusing treatment. Do what you can, but know in the end it is up to her. I hope that she decides to get the treatment she so desperately needs. Please take care of yourself. Good luck to you both,

I agree, I would be working at getting her into the hospital. She may live to thank you for it. Best of luck with it. Let us know how it went.

I'm with BlueCrystal...I would take her to the hospital.
Sad story, but if she wants to kill herself, she can refuse treatment.
My mother in law smokes 3 packs of cigs a day, hardly eats, and her body is like an anorexic little girl. Skin and bones. Refuses to get off the couch. Nothing we can do. If a person refuses to get in the ambulance, or in your car, there is nothing you can do. I wonder who passed that half assed law?

Dear Clownn,
It's tragic. My own father bled to death due to his Alcolholism.
Your friend is alone in the house ?  Is she someone whom you are caring for, could you get her to a hospital ?
I helped a neighbor with his sick wife. She drank herself down to about 65 lbs. We'd all go into town together & need to stop at 3 bars along the way. I'd help her into the lady's room.  She was like a victim of war. All bones. She'd been a vibrant woman. A PHD Scientist, Marine Biologist, worked in her husband's Dental Practice & a mother of two fine sons.
IMo only God & the stupid devil knows what happens to these people like your friend.   Keep up your own sobriety ! Help her if possible. Pamela
