liver or gallbladder pain when drinking.

by lissa80, Oct 08, 2009 05:58AM
I had my gallbladder out about 6 years ago.  It was a total screw up and I ended up back in hospital a few days later with a bile leak. I also had hepatis c which i have been treated for and no longer have. Anyway my problem at the moment is every time i drink alcohol I get severe pain under my right rib cage, in my left shoulder and my back.  It lasts for up to twenty minutes. I also get really really hot and flustered.  Everywhere really hurts.  I sweat badly and can't breath during an attack.  Nothing releves it I just try to get through it. I also yawn all the way through it and get unbelieveably tired. Has anyone else had this problem.  I like drinking too much to give it up.I'm 29.

This happens everytime you drink and you still like it??  This is a medical issue you are having and you need to see the doctor.  When you are ready to put the bottle down look us up.  You are on a roller coaster ride that has only one way and that is down.......Be safe and get yourself checked out.......sara

Hi. I'm sorry but i think you should get your facts right. I never said that i drank all the time and as for putting down the bottle, I drink out of a can.  My life is fine and I'm not going down hill I am happily married to the man i have been with for ten years and have three beautiful boys. I have seen doctors about this problem and if they knew do you think I would be on here asking for help? You obviously don't have any idea what I'm talking about so why answer me.

Most of your digestive organs are on that side of your body so it could be a multitude of things. At one time, I had the same pain under my ribcage, and the doctor ended up diagnosing "fatty infiltration of the liver". Not a surprise for me, because I'd been drinking a lot for a long time.  I solved the problem by quitting, but that's because I really needed to.

In your case I would be very careful of the Hepatitis C though.  I'm not an expert on it but I know of some people who thought they had beat the virus and it came back at a later time.  If you still have Hep C, then drinking alcohol is the equivalent of pouring gasoline on your liver.  That's not a joke.  If on the other hand, your Doctor says that it's gone and is never coming back then that's great.  In the end, you have to admit that alcohol disagrees to your system, so keep searching for answers with a doctor, or listen to your body. If it gives you pain, it's trying to tell you something.  With the liver issues that you've had, you have to be very careful. Cirrhosis is a horrible way to die, and it's a lot easier to get it if your liver is already compromised

hey, i think your comment to Sara was unnecessarily obtuse. she is telling the truth. as for your health, it's obviously in jeopardy. I have/ have had fatty liver and a inflamed pancreas. The latter hurst right under ones ribcages, sometimes more to the right, sometimes more to the left. alcohol disease often start in the pancreas and then goes onto cirrosis, which is nasty, nasty, nasty. I have seen three people die from it. Also, the pancreas can rupture, and that is a life threatening situation. please google pancreas and inflammation and alcohol, you know how to do it. Good luck and I'm sorry you feel defensive, but we all try to help./ Pia

Why are you wasting time on a freakin' forum?  Get your hiney to the doctor's office! CT Scan of the upper abdomen with or with out contrast, CBC, CMP and make sure they do liver function and kidney function tests as well as pancreatic enzymes. Run a Hep C titer as well.  And till you have some definete results - quit boozing it up!
Anyone got an EASY button????

it is one thing to be an adult and struggle with your own addiction problem knowing it is causing problems..but to know it has and continue to subject children to its effects is a peeve for me...has been for 24 years that i've been a alcohol/drug counselor.I had a 4 yr.old boy right in front of his mom tell me she was smoking rock the nite b4..she lied and said 3 weeks! When i was 19 mos.sober my neighbors 11 yr.old daughter came up to me looked me square in the eye and told me how glad she was i'd stop drinking! She told me she could tell how drunk I was by the way i parked my car.....it was crooked and 2 feet from the curb!Out of the mouths of babes come such wisdom!

I hear ya'! I grew up with an alcoholic father and he got plastered. However, it deteriorated to the point when his personality changed after ONE glass of wine and I could tell right away when he was in ANY way intoxicated, as children learn to. I am an alcoholic myself, struggling with it as we speak, so I know. it is extremely difficult and painful to grow up with alcoholic parents! And as to smoking the rock... used to do that too... was the start of the ruin of my marriage, economy, carreer, self esteem, self- repsect, you name it... Luckily I stopped that 4 years ago+ and haven't looked back. Struggling with drink is WAY enough and actually harder for me to control... I am still in the tragic part of drinking when I irrationally think I can somehow LEARN how to drink "nicely". That is why I am so grateful to you and all other lovely people here that meet me and others with love, compassion, repsect and YET clarity and strenness! Bless you.

If you have a problem with alcohol there is no way you can "nicely" drink.  It is all or nothing.  We as addicts cannot control this.
