zoning out

by strdsbrg, Jun 06, 2009 11:14AM
I've had a couple of episodes lately when I drink heavily.  I usually drink pretty heavy once a week, usually on a Friday.  About a month ago, I had an episode where, according to a friend, I zoned out and started making faces.  He said it was like I lost my mind.  It only lasted a couple of minutes.  Last night, I was out drinking with another friend, and he told me that in the middle of a conversation, I put my head down and then looked up and started saying something that had nothing to do with what we were talking about.  Again, he said it was like I lost my mind for about 30 seconds.  In both cases, I was aware after they happened that something strange had occurred that I couldn't control.

I have what I think is a slight anxiety disorder, but I've never really had a panic attack, or anything severe with it.  One of my friends has suggested that the alcohol might trigger the anxiety and that it's manifesting itself in these odd "zoning out" periods.  Could that be or could it be some other neurological thing?  Should I see a doctor?

I've been drinking for 25 years and have never really had negative effects from it.  I've never even considered the idea that I'm an alcoholic because I usually only drink once a week, if that, and there are plenty of times that I have a beer or two and that's it.  I'm reading here, though, that you can't judge an alcoholic solely on the amount he drinks.  I do look forward to my nights out with some drinks and realize that stopping wouldn't be easy at all, so perhaps that's an indication of alcoholism.

Anyone have any ideas about these strange things that are happening to me.  Anyone have similar experiences?  I'd appreciate any input.

hi. these episodes may or may not be directly related to drinking, but it would seem there is some correlation. are you on any medications? they could play a part. my main concern would be something like tias or transient ischemic attacks which are like miniature seizures. i would definitely get seen by a doctor. keep us posted and best wishes,   gm
