Heartburn Relief

I was diagnosed with a severe dairy allergy and possible gluten intolerance.  I have been off gluten completely for about 4 months and off dairy for about 2 months.  Lately I have had horrible almost constant heartburn, burping, sore throat at night, and a feeling of fullness/ pressure in my stomach.  My doctor wants me to try some heartburn medication as it's possible I have an ulcer or acid reflux.  I have called multiple manufacterers about ingredients in their products and many say that while they don't put dairy or gluten there are no promises since they don't test the end product.  I'm terrified to try a medication with the chance of getting into something with dairy/lactose in it.  What do other people with a dairy (including lactose and casein) and gluten intolerance do for heartburn meds? I'm desperate! Please help.

Thanks for the comment! That is very interesting about the broccoli, I had never heard that before. I do eat quite a bit of it anyway due to my limited diet. I have been using the baking soda for the last week, but it isn't something I can do for a very long time.  If taken for a extended period of time the baking soda can affect your kidneys and liver, so I am still on the hunt of something that I can take.  I have an appointment to see an allergist in about 10 days so I'm hoping he can provide me with answers.  Thanks a bunch for your thoughts!

Caroline,

I have a dairy allergy (and did not realize it) and have suffered for years downing tons of Tums and other antacids. After a huge amount of experimenting I came across an article about how broccoli is the only known cure for ulcers (I started to get them also). So after some testing: If I eat some dairy I just take the main stem of the broccoli (I use organic but any will due) cut off about an inch peel it and eat it before bed (probably will work at any time but this is when I remember to eat it). And like magic no ulcers acid reflux, or heartburn. If I forget to take the broccoli on a day when I ate dairy I will usually have bad heartburn and acid reflux and wake up. In this case I will put around 1 1/2 teaspoons of baking soda in a glass of water and gulp it down (a bit nasty tasting but instant results). It is like putting water on a fire you will instantly feel the gas leave your stomach in what can only be described as an acidy belch (if not you may need more baking soda). Then I will watch tv for an hour and go back to bed feeling fine. I hated taking antacids that did not work and prescription meds. Please let me know if this works for you as well! I just can't believe how simple it was to relieve years of suffering and it would be great if we could help others.

I have used prescription meds like Nexium, Rantidine, Prevacid, etc.  They are available over the counter now.  I have reflux condition and it helps very much.
