Shrimp Allergy????

I  once had a piece of deep fried shrimp.  Deep fried foods do not bother me.  After eating just one small piece of the shrimp I had an extreme pain in my chest similar to the feeling of heartburn.  It lasted for several hours and antacids did not help.  The pain was very intense.  Just felt a tiny bit tight, maybe even.  I was just wondering if I may be allergic to shrimp, or if it was a sign of something else.

Hello Basf2273,

I think what you experienced was an allergic reaction to shrimp. Maybe it is time to get tested for food allergies. I've heard this is done through blood tests. I would suggest telling your doctor about what happened when you
ate the piece of shrimp and that you would like to be tested for food allergies. I wish you well. Eve

It does sound like an allergic reaction to shrimp. It would be best to consult an allergist so you can get properly tested.

I have had allergy testing on the past for environmental allergens....i have several of them.  The shrimp incident was the first time I had a piece of shrimp.  I haven't had any since because i was scared I would react the same way again.  I asked about this on Health Tap and a doctor there said that heartburn isn't a symptom of allergies.  But I also said there like here that fried foods never bother me.

Hello there,

Just finished reading your comments. This sounds like an allergic reaction to me. The problem with food allergies is that they can get worse.
If you haven't had an allergy test, I would recommend that you have one to see whether you are allergic to shrimp. This would also tell you if you are allergic to other foods as well as to dust, dander etc.
Where I live, your family doctor has to give you a referral to an allergist.
Till you found out whether or not you are allergic to shrimp, do not eat anymore shrimp.  I wish you well.  Eve
