Allergic reaction?

I am currently pregnant. I'm only about six weeks in and because it takes so long to get an appointment here I started prenatal vitamins on my own. This is not my first pregnancy, so I figured it would be safe to take them. The day after taking them, I woke up with a rash all over my hands with pain in my fingertips. The rash almost looks like hives. I also had a bit of swelling in my mouth along with it being really dry. I didn't even think about it being related to my vitamins, so I took them again. Today I woke up with all the same symptoms, but also very stiff in my joints. My question is, is this a common allergic reaction? I've made an appointment, but what can I do in the meantime? Being pregnant, is benadryl safe to take? Help!

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello,
It can be due to hives. Hives (medically known as urticaria) are red, itchy, raised areas of skin that appear in varying shapes and sizes. Many cases of hives are "idiopathic," meaning no cause is known. Others may be triggered by stress induced by hormonal changes during pregnancy, viral infections or medications.

In such cases, taking antihistaminics like Benadryl and application of calamine lotion is helpful. If the symptoms are severe then you may need topical steroids for which you have to consult a doctor. Also the vitamin supplements are usually added after 12 weeks of pregnancy.
It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. Treatment can be started only when the diagnosis is confirmed. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.
