Allergies?

by Britttttany, Mar 02, 2009 11:14PM
Well I just returned from my first softball practice and when I came home I had a very sore throat and a runny nose. As time progressed on it got worse and I began to sneeze nonstop. My runny nose has gotten worse. It's gotten so bad that I can't sleep because i'm constantly sneezing and blowing my nose. My eyes wont stop watering and they've turned very red. Is this allergies or is there some sort of diagnosis like this after a workout? haha. please help.

Hello,

Your symptoms are suggestive of rhinitis. Rhinitis is inflammation of the inner lining of the nose and includes symptoms like rhinorrhea (runny nose),nasal itching, nasal congestion and sneezing.
You can take OTC antihistaminics like benadryl or Claritin. Longer-acting antihistamines are available by prescription. They cause less drowsiness and can work just as well. These medications include fexofenadine (Allegra), and cetirizine (Zyrtec).

You can also use nasal corticosteroid sprays like nasocort or flonase. Decongestants may also be helpful in reducing symptoms such as nasal congestion, but they should not be used for long periods. Cromolyn sodium is a nasal spray (Nasalcrom) for treating rhinitis. Also inhale plenty of steam.

If the symptoms persist then antibiotics may be needed.Pls consult an ENT specialist in that case.
Hope it helps.Take care and pls do keep me posted on how you are doing.Kind regards.
