Allergy-Chronic Ear Pain

by wendy714, Oct 03, 2009 03:31PM
Two years ago i broke out in hives.  Wasnt aware of any allergies.  Last year, in August i came down with a cold, that took three weeks to clear up beacause it went into my ears.  Repeatedly went to the DR, was sent to ENT, said it was TMJ.  Had a third opinion he concurred with the last.  I have been tested for allergies, didnt find anything.  I think it is environmental, all types pf smoke and chemicals, like the ones in facial creams and makeup.  My ring makes my finger breakout in a rash.  Former dr said i had thyroid disease and that that had something to do with allergic reactions.  I have had two mris 3 cat scans of the ear and adjacent areas.  Nothing wrong.  Ear pain periocially would come back, when i got a cold, or the flu.  I taking claritin, decongestant  and Currently nasonex two times aday.  My current DR was the one who finally said the ear pain was due to allergies.  Prescribed nasonex, which my insurance sompany said that is was too expensive to just let my try it had to try and fail three other drug for that, that took all summer long.  Finally got nasonex, needs to take up to a couple months to work.  I am very suseptible to illness now, and it all goes to my ears.  I am very upset, because i dont think anyone knoew anything about this, but i havent seen an allergist, yet.  I have conjestion in the ears especially after i wake up in the morning, i also get chronic headaches from this.

Hi
Welcome to the forum!
What you probably have is an eustachian tube (tube connecting ear to throat) block that is causing pain. Try valsalva maneuver (take a deep breath and blow while pinching your nostrils shut and closing your mouth). This will help clear the secretions in the tube that connects the back of your throat with your ear.
Also taking steam before doing this can give better results. Also it will help you to take bath with earplugs on. This will prevent water from going into the ear.
Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
