Allergy towards Doxycycline

Allergy towards Doxycycline

Hello, I had a severe allergic reaction to a tetracycline medicine called Minocycline. I got hives, extreme itch and trouble breathing. My question is if Doxycycline will cause the same side effects as the Minocycline because of it also being a tetracycline. I know have zyrtec, just incase if i get a allergic reaction to it.

Hi, it is very possible that you could be allergic to the Doxycycline as well.  Many allergies like that are to groups of medicines, not just one particular medicine.   For example:  I am allergic to ibuprofin, but my drs consider me allergic to all NSAIDS.  I am surprised that your dr would put you on it with a history of allergy to something else in the group, but I guess he thought that was what you needed.

I would recommend that you have a liquid antihistamine instead of a tablet.  Liquids work faster than tablets.  I have used liquid gels capsules for similar applications when I wanted portability and quick acting.  I chose Benadryl, but Zyrtec should have a liquid available as well.

I hope that you don't have a reaction and that you get to feeling better.
