Anesthesia alergy(allergy)

Dear all,

I have had a very bad experience with local anesthetic twice now and my doctor is sending me to alergy (allergy) testing. I would like to find out, is there any other method other then body provocation? I would not like to go through that experience again - it was very bad (tachycardia, feeling sick and almost loosing consciousness)... I will be happy to share experiences and info. Best regards!

There are several "local" anesthetics on the market that will "deaden" the skin for surgical proceedures or shots including a couple that will temp. freeze the skin nerves for a couple of minutes.  Make sure to remember the name of the drug you had problems with and have the doctor note a "sensitivity" or "allergy" on the front of your chart so that it isn't used in the future.  Allergy testing is usually done with needle punctures, but there is a blood test that can be done as well.  Check around to see what doctors in your area does that test.  Generally you can call a blood lab in the area and ask if they do the allergy testing on blood and if they do, ask what doctors order it.  HOpe this helps

Tachycardia may be induced by the epinephrine that's in the anesthetic.  The feeling of nausea and the feeling of about to loose conciousness is related to syncope (fainting).  The signs and symptoms of an allergic response is itchiness, rash, wheezing.  The symptoms you're giving does not indicate allergy.

The incidence of allergy to anesthetic (especially to local) is very rare.  Typically it's related to the ester type of anesthetics and much more rarely to the amide type of anesthetics.
