Antihisminics OR Immunosuppressants?

Antihisminics OR Immunosuppressants?

Hello everyone!
Just joined this group. It was very interesting to read all the feedbacks and questions.
My mother just had her appointment with the specialist in allergy and what he said to her was that basically theres no specific reason for this to happen (idiopathic, as you all know) but he also mentioned that in this type of urticaria the best treatment was NOT an antihistaminic (because is ineffective) but an Immunosuppressant, similar to those use in transplanted patients but in a smaller dosage.
We are new at this topic and we need all the help and advise we can get.
Also would like to get some dietary advice (what foods to avoid)
Thanks in advance!
;)

Hi, welcome to the forum, Urticaria is seen secondary to exposure to allergen and mediated by IgE antibodies. Your body is known to hypersensitive to certain things.

Stinging insects, Aeroallergens (uncommon), Foods and additives like Milk, egg, peanuts, nuts, soy, and wheat are the most common agents to cause generalized urticaria.
This triggering factor should be identified and should be avoided. A skin allergy test can be useful.

Initial part of the treatment includes Anti-histaminic later if not controlled then Leukotriene Receptor Antagonist may be added. You can go for the long term therapy; side effects will not be matter of concern except for mild sedation and sometimes headache. Immunosuppressants are not commonly given in this condition. Certain drugs like chloroquine, sulfasalazine and dapsone has been proven beneficial in some patients. Immunosuppressant should be given only if there is an associated autoimmune disorder like SLE. To rule out SLE initial lab investigations like ESR should be done. I suggest her to consult allergy specialist. Take care and regards.
