Blocked nose for 3+ years

Hi I am desperate and so frustrated with my sinus problems. I have always had a slightly blocked nose but for last 2 years it has become chronic and constant and worse at night. I have had a January 2009 septoplasty and since have been diagnosed with a mold allergy. I have tried numerous oral allergy medications and am on immunotherapy injections since July 2010. I take oral decongestants, ibuprofen, antihistamine and saline sprays daily and Im still so congested in my facial sinuses and can feel the swelling each night. I have thick clear mucus and have been put on antibiotics a number of times with a suspected sinus infection but it never helps. I need some advice as its such an antisocial problem and Im finding it very depressing.

Hello,
From your symptoms it looks like chronic sinusitis. Chronic sinusitis can be caused by infections of the upper respiratory tract, allergies and deviated nasal septum .Other suspected causes include mold or fungi in the sinuses. In your case, you have already had septoplasty, so mold allergy can be an important cause in your case.

Treatment includes avoidance of allergen. Maintain/clean dehumidifiers and air conditioners regularly. Air filters of the ac trap allergens, like molds, dust and pollen.  When the filters do not work properly, allergens may be released into the air, causing typical allergy symptoms, such as watery eyes, runny nose, and wheezing. Wash shower curtains, bathroom tiles, and grout regularly and use a dehumidifier in your house.

You can use OTC antihistaminic like Benadryl, zyrtec. Nasal decongestants and corticosteroids are also useful. If there is any difficulty in breathing then bronchodilators can be used. In severe cases, Immunotherapy is advised.
It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.
