Burning, itching hands and feet when showering or working out

About six months ago, I started having really burning and itchy feet when I showered.  Then it seemed to also occur when I was working out at the gym.  Recently, it has moved into my hands and they seem "redder" than normal.  I have no other health symptoms.  Actually, I had blood tests two months ago and everything was normal except for low sodium(but it was just one point under normal).  Any ideas as to why this has started occuring?

Hi, from your history it is clear that you having allergy to water or its contents including sweat during workout. Very less has been known about water allergy. It can be due to exposure to allergens present in water in your area or due to ions in non-distilled water.

If you are allergic to water following measures will help you-
- Stay away from water as long as possible.
- Avoid going in rain outside.
- Keep yourself cool during summer as even sweating will cause reaction.
- Try boiling water before bath and as well can try hot water bath. Avoid showers.
- Dry yourself immediately as soon you finish your bath.

Also you need to avoid harsh soaps which may cause allergy. Itching during gym may be due to sweat which is cause for the allergy. Usually allergens are small molecules which can penetrate the layers of the skin and sweating is known to enhance this action.
Systemic antihistamines (antipruritics) such as hydroxyzine or cetirizine against prescription may be helpful. Even addition of corticosteroids has possible benefits.
I hope this will help you.  Consult dermatologist. Take care and regards.

I've had the same problem, with the itchy feet after showering.  So, I got one of those callus removers that they used to use during pedicures in salons, but don't anymore.  I scraped down the outer layer of skin and scrubbed the heck out of my feet.  I then dried them thoroughly and later put on a Freeman's foot lotion with peppermint or something.  In addition to itchy and HOT feet, I'd lost three toe nails within days of each other.  Research indicated that it could have been a foot fungus, but I'm not sure how I would have contracted such, as I am a stay at home mom and rarely go anywhere.  So I'm beginning to think there are chemicals in our carpet that are causing an adverse reaction.  This is the second day that my almost 3 year old has complained about itchy feet after she's gotten out of the tub.  The soles of your feet are extremely porous, so I am very concerned.

Hi,

I am sorry I can't answer your question, but I can tell you I have exactly the same thing.  Seems to be contact with water when showering - not always, but often enough to be disconcerting.  The itch is intensely painful and I rub my hands or feet very hard on towel or something to try to relieve the sensation. Also when this sensation is present my hands, particularly the palms which are mostly affected seem red and a little mottled.   It doesn't seem to be related to any products.  It doesn't last very long.

I do have allergies, and hypothryoid.  But this doesn't seem to be typical of anything.

Would also be very interested if anyone has any input on this.

Sally
