Cough Variant Asthma

Last year my son was diagnosed with cough variant asthma.  He was prescribed a bunch of medicines but none of them seemed to help his cough & clearing of the throat.  Over time the season changed & it resolved on its own.  It's now Fall again & he has has the same symptoms all over again but they are worse.  What is the normal treatment for this in children?

Hi, welcome to the forum, cough dominant asthma is commonly seen in cold weather. Hence a test with bronchodilators for 2-3 weeks will be useful to relieve the symptoms. If the symptoms don’t improve stop the medications.

Other possibilities needed to rule out are foreign body and anatomical airway abnormality in the bronchus which can be source of re-infection and cough. You need to be evaluated by complete blood count, chest X-ray, allergy test and sputum (if present) culture.

Treatment of underlying condition like cough suppressants, antibiotics, and bronchodilators will help to relieve the symptoms. I suggest you to consult physician and get a detailed evaluation. Take care and regards.
