Dealing with The Itch

I had a near fatal drug reaction to allopurinol three months ago and the physical and dermatological problems are still a real problem.  But I could handle it sooooooo much better if I didn't itch, all over, all the time.  I'm on prediisone--third round--to try to get things under control, and I have some ointments and other things that almost seem to make it worse.  This syndrome is known for being stubborn and particularly uncomfortable, so I was prepared, sort of.  But I'm looking for some advice about making the itch to away or become at least bearable in the meantime.  I know about Aveeno and antihistamines, but they work once or twice and then...the itch comes right back.

Anyone have some heavy duty stuff that did the job?  Or another way of managing a nasty itch?
