Deviated Septum..

Deviated Septum..

So I went to the ENT today and had them stick that scope up my nose and apparently I have a pretty bad deviated septum ... he gave me a script for a nasal spray and an antibiotic but I'm not sure what the antibiotic is for, I don't like taking antibiotics if I don't have to so I'm hesitant to take that.
He mentioned surgery but for the possible future ...

I'm hoping the nasal spray will help the allergies and the post nasal drip ...

Hello.

I think you should call the doctor's office tomorrow and ask them to clarify the diagnosis.  You may have a sinus infection in which case the antibiotics are needed.  Deviated septums can keep the sinuses from draining properly which frequently leads to infections.

I certainly understand your hesitancy to take antibiotics.  It can lead to problems with resistant bacteria.  Antibiotics can also cause digestive problems.

Feel better.

Hello,
Most cases a deviated septum can be corrected with a minor surgical procedure known as a septoplasty, in which the surgeon enters through the nostrils and cuts away the obtruding matter. The antibiotics have been prescribed to alleviate the symptoms and decrease the infection if any.

However the choice of treatment is surgery only. Get it checked from an ENT specialist.
It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.

I did got to an ENT specialist who did an exam and diagnosed me already. As for the antibiotics - I do not have a sinus infection, in fact I feel fine (much better than last week!) my mucous wasn't a weird color, no fever, it was allergies which is pretty much what the Dr. said anyways. He never mentioned sinus infection. I have the Nasonex which I am going to try today, he said that should help to prevent any sinus infections. I'm thinking of getting the surgery though just to get it over with. I heard it wasn't that bad.
