Diagnosis, Treatment, Medical Equipment Help!

My mother had Graves disease.  She did the radio active iodine treatment to try and normalize her hyper thyroid condition  Since then she has not been outside in over a year because her allegeries started to overeact.  About 24 weeks ago the allegeric reactions began to get more serious, she began to start choking on a daily basis.  Currently she has choking episodes about 4 times a day on average.  She always has to have some supervision, to adminster liquid benadrhyl, because she cannot do it herself.  Lately it has gotten worse, she no longer makes coughing noises before starting to choke, she just becomes unresponsive.    We have a doctor who is making home visits, and I am very thankful for that, but I want to make sure we are treating her right.  She has been on Armour thyroid for about 24 weeks, and we have been slowly increasing her dosage. Choking 4 times a day while waiting for her thyroid to stabilize, so her allergies will diminish, seems like too much of a risk.  I have been looking around, and I have not seen any other cases similar to this, and I would be encouraged if someone else had dealt with this before.  I have read the the thyroid can cause allergy problems, but I have not read about anything this severe.  Right now the doctor thinks that the biggest allergy offender is dust mites.
Recently, my mother has developed soars on her mouth, which makes it hard for her to eat right. The doctor has given her vitamins to treat this. The doctor has said that her vital signs are getting  stronger, but I am concerned that her allergic responses are getting harder to monitor.  Also she has become somewhat bed ridden, and I am concerned about her muscles atrophying, or clots forming.  Is there a medical centers that would be able to treat this better? I know thyroid treatment can take a long time. Could this be caused by anything else?  What equipment could I get to monitor her oxygen levels and sound an alarm for when she has her silent choking episodes?  Any helpful  information I can get, especially from medical professionals, would be greatly appreciated.

I developed asthma at age 59 after treatment for graves disease with radioactive iodine. I found that I had been exposed to mold but it seems coincidental that none of this materialized prior to the RA1 treatment. I also became aggravated by dust during this time. The mold was at my office and I changed jobs. Once the mold was no longer an issue, the terrible asthma symptoms went away. I still sneeze and cough a bit when I dust. So I would say: check for mold as well as other triggers  - you cannot always see it. Good luck

Hi, welcome to the forum, her symptoms are suggestive of hypersensitive reaction to certain allergen. As you stated that she is on Armour thyroid extract, it can be the reason for worsening of symptoms. There is secondary release of histamines which causes bronchoconstriction and choking. The Armour is known to contain animal thyroid extract which is antigenic and can elicit allergic reaction in susceptible individuals. Such extract are not preferred in elderly, esp keeping cardiac function in mind.

Levothyroxine can be preferred in such cases and may reduce her breathing symptoms. Allergy specialist will help you to rule out the probable allergen. As for sleep monitoring and devises are concerned you can consult sleep specialist. Take care and regards.
