Does this sound like allergies or something else?

I have had a chronic stuffy/congested nose for 3 years. It doesn't seem to be seasonal. I have it all year long. My left nostril is worse than my right. I don't cough, have hives, sneeze, itchy eyes, etc. I also have very severe cognitive issues (brain fog) and fatigue. Basically, my major symptoms are brain fog, fatigue, and chronic stuffy nose. I'm guessing I have sinusitis or rhinitis. I could have non-allergic rhinitis. Sometimes my brain fog increases when I smell certain chemicals or when the air is humid. I have a prescription for singulair, claritin, saline rinse, and astelin. The claritiin seems to help a little with my brain fog, but I'm not sure if this is all in my mind. Does this sound like I have allergies? I can ask my PCP to see an ENT doctor. I've done a lot of research on the brain fog issue and want to try a gluten free diet. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I should proceed? I have an appointment with my PCP soon. Should I get tested for food allergies and airborne allergies? I just don't want to be taking all this medication if I do not have allergies.

I would say that you have already been diagnosed with allergies.  Singulair is an anti-leukotriine (allergy response chemical) and Astelin is a nasal spray antihistamine.  Both are only used to treat allergies.  The dr would not have prescribed them without a diagnosis of allergies.

The brain fog could be several things.  It sounds like your allergies are more severe than the current regimen can control  You need to add an oral antihistamine, be tested for airborn allergens and possibly start allergy shots.

Be sure to see a board certified allergist who uses a skin ***** test method.  They will usually to a follow up test with intradermals.  Usually less than 20 mini shots just under the skin.  I had about 16 on my last testing and it isn't bad.  There certainly are a lot worse things in this world. Then you should do immunotherapy shots - a personally formulated serum of your allergens designed to retrain your immune system to not react to those harmless substances.  It is very natural.

Take care and feel better.
