Food allergy and pregnancy

by Tia Lucila, Nov 22, 2006 12:00AM
Several months ago I was diagnosed with an allergy to dairy and soy products.  This is different than lactose intolerance.  My allergy causes me to have digestive discomfort.  I've been so good the last few months and haven't touched any dairy and haven't felt the cramping and discomfort I used to.  Well, enough is enough.  I just have to indulge once in a while in pizza, cheesecake and enchiladas.  I don't care if I have some cramps.  But, I am pregnant and don't want to hurt the little one.  Could this potentially hurt the little one in any way?  I have posted this question in the maternal forum too, since it's a bit unusual of a question.

Hi, it's possible your baby will develop the same food allergy as you have but at this stage it is not certain so I would say don't worry if you expose him/her to occasional dairy products in your diet. There is little research on pre-natal allergy and it is pretty much unheard of for a child in utero to suffer any kind of serious reaction to what the mother eats....to be honest s/he will be more likely to develop the allergy to dairy because you already have the predisposition to it, exposing him/her to the allergen in the womb won't make a material differnce either way. Good luck!
