For 4 months I have been constantly coughing, gagging, choking, spitting up mucus and throwing up. I have been to 3 different doctors and each time they have treated me with allergy meds., cortizone shots, and diffent antibiotics to no avail.. I had a CAT scan of my sinus 2 weeks ago and the sinus is clear. They now have me scheduled for allergy testing coming in a week. I am into my 9th day of a 10 day antibiotic for the 4 time. Each time I feel a little better for about a week, and then the symptons return. This round of antibiotic I haven't had any relief. I am beginning to be very worried that this is much more serious than just allergies. Please advice.
Talk to your doctor about the possibility of asthma. Many things cause a chronic cough such as this including uncontrolled asthma (frequently developed in adults after URIs), or even acid reflux. So now you have two possibilities to run by your dro.
I hope you get some answers soon. Couging that much is truly miserable.
Hi, welcome to the forum, if all other causes like respiratory tract infection, sinusitis etc. then another important possibility would be cystic fibrosis with predominantly respiratory involvement. But this needs to be evaluated in detail.
Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disorder. You need to undergo investigations such as Sweat chloride, Molecular diagnosis and Nasal potential difference measurements to rule out this condition.
The treatment is usually symptomatic. DNase I (dornase alfa), hypertonic saline and N-acetylcysteine are the available to loosen the mucus. I would suggest you to consult physician for further evaluation. Take care and regards.
