Is it allergies?

by K086, Apr 12, 2009 03:43AM
I'm sorry this is long, but I wanted to put a little history.  I am 23 years old and female.

I have not been able to pop my ears in about 4 years, and after a while I think I got used to the pressure buildup.  If I got on a plane one of my ears would crackle, but otherwise I would have an earache.  A little while after this, I had a CONSTANT post nasal drip.  Also, my nose would have a clear watery fluid come out of it every day.

After saying that, I saw an ENT for the first time after a wave of sinus infections and antibiotics.  He walked in and told me I had allergies and that I should take an antihistamine and decongestant every day.  I have been taking Clariton-D every day since then.

I did not have any severe sinus infections since.  I thought I was getting better, but last December my throat was literally killing me.  It was so swollen that if I looked up it would feel better because it seemed to scratch it some how.  I get these sore throats quite often, but I usually always knew it was from that annoying post nasal drip.  Anyways, she said I had an ear infection and gave me antibiotics.  I had a reaction to them, so 3 days later I go back.  Different doctor.  She looks in my ears to see, and she says that my ears were fine!

About two months later, I get a sudden ear twitching inside my left ear.  I go see a doctor that day, and she says that I have chronic allergies that caused fluid pockets on both of my eardrums.  I go see different ENT and he gives me ear drops and he says that I have a buildup of something on my eardrums and that the drops should take care of it.  He also said that my ears looked healthy and nothing was inflammed.  Well, since the drops my ears have been freaking out.  More twitching and ringing sounds and humming and movements.

I got a sinus infection 2 weeks ago.  He gave me antibiotics and steroid pack to stop the coughing.  I semi-recovered, but overall I felt healthy.  But 2 days ago I woke up to a horrible headache.  I swear I could feel my brain all the way down to the base of my neck, but it wasn't severe.  The next day, i felt horrible.  I went to see the doctor and I have another sinus infection and she said that my ear drums look like crumpled aluminum foil with fluid behind the eardrum.  She was surprised to see that my eardrums look different at every visit.  She said that this time my eardrums are bulging from the fluid, so she gave me 2 weeks worth of antibiotics to see if it will help.  Also, I have stringy blood in my spit.  I do not have colored mucous or severe runny nose.

I am very tired of being sick and letting doctors play guessing games, because it seems to be getting worse every day.  Is it just allergies or my ears? Then, what should I do?
