My daughter's itchy feet...

My daughter is 7 years young, and she seems to have itchy feet every now and then.  It's weird because she plays with the same things, walks around in the home fine, and this itchiness just keeps coming back.  I know that she is allergic to certain food items, but when walking around in the home, there are no food items unless she is in the kitchen/dining area.  This problem with her feet even occurred on a visit at my mother's residence, and I just can't put my finger on it.  I also would like to know......how often should I take my children to see an allergist?  Only when an issue pops up, once or twice per year, or....?  This is truly different for me.  My son is 5 years young and seems to be fine with everything.  I don't feed them anything that contains peanuts, and it's not tolerated at their school, so I think I'm pretty safe as can be there.  All I do for her itchy feet is give her some olive oil to rub on the soles of her feet, and the itchiness goes away after about one or two minutes.  If it gets really bad, then I turn to Benadryl for support.  The Benadryl was given to her in the hospital, and recommended by the doctor who helped her, at that time.

Please help us, as any/all insight into this strange bodily behaviour would be truly appreciated greatly!!

Hi,

Have you tried changing her footwear or other clothing/material she might be in touch with. Your child has preexisting allergies and may have a new irritant here.

This may also be some insects or mites in the house. Do you have any pets at home?

You may try to protect her feet by using some cotton socks or footwear which may prevent the contact.

In case the child has any sever form of itching or allergic reactions, please take her immediately to her doctor.

I was very interested in your note about your daughter.  My oldest daughter is 9 and has been plagued by itchy feet for the last several days.  It wakes her up at night (around 1 a.m.) or keeps her from getting to sleep.  It also bothers her throughout the day.  She recently had 5th disease (I think) which caused a rash and some itching on the rest of her body, but not severe like this has been.  The rash is gone now and there is no rash on her feet (just redness when she scratches).

We have tried Caladryl and Cortaid plus a good dose of Benadryl, but nothing seems to help much.  She had allergy testing done about 18 months ago and had virtually no allergies (3 mild positives for cockroaches, dust mites, and cats).  Did you ever figure out what was causing your daughter's itching?  I feel a little silly calling the doctor about itchy feet.

Hi,

This could be allergic reactions to unknown substances, skin hypersensitivity, eczema, dermatitis .

She should not scratch or pick at the lesions as this would cause secondary bacterial infection.

Do you notice the lesions trigerred in response to a specific stimulus in the past? Try to avoid substances that she had shown allergic reactions to.

Has she had allergic reactions in the past?

Apply calamine lotion at the site and take some oral antihistamine medications for the symptoms.  

It would be advisable to consult an allergy specialist for her symptoms and get a proper clinical evaluation done.

Thanks for your input--I didn't get a note about your reply, so I just now noticed it.

We ended up taking her to the pediatrician, who decided that it was a combination of 5th disease and her overactive sweat glands.  Every time her feet would get hot and sweaty the itching would increase.  She has had to go shoeless or wear flip-flops whenever possible.  She's doing better now.

Hi My daughter had a Subarachnoid Heamorhage in January, she amazingly not only survived but we left 2 weeks later with her fit and well! Amzingly happy and feel very lucky.
We have been back for 2 Angiograms, a week after the second angio she had a Urinary Tract infection and was in hospital for 2 nights.
Recently she has been itching her feet quite a bit there is nothing there, so i am baffled.
She is under the peaditrician - She keeps getting constipation since she was 2, He treated her juist last week as it was not shifting. - She is also due a kidney test to make sure that the uti didnt do any damage.
We just cannot get to the bottom of the constipation - great diet excercise ect...and the itchy feet goodness knows - Dont want to scare myself but could it be connected with Kidneys?>

I'm so sorry to hear about all your daughter's problems.  My daughter's itchy feet seemed to come from 5th disease and has resolved.  However, my daughter has had urinary issues too.  At 6 mos. of age she had her first & only UTI and was subsequently diagnosed with ureteral reflux.  After staying on antibiotics for several years, she finally had a corrective procedure shortly before her 6th birthday.  Both of my other 2 children also have ureteral reflux since it is hereditary.  If you need to talk about the tests she may have, I'd be happy to talk to you.  My kids have all had voiding cystograms (the name is actually longer, but to abbreviate: VCUG) and the girls have had numerous renal ultrasounds.

I had severe allergic reactions due to FOOD allergies. I did not know for about 2 years and sometimes I had blisters from scratching all the time.  It looked like my skin was peeling off. I used everything possible to clear this thing and could not. Allergy specialist had no clue what to do with me.
In 2005 I changed my diet completely and my foot itchiness and blistering ended.Seriously.I do not eat anything that it is processed , no sugar in any way...no white flour or rice...l eat lots of vegetables raw and some fruits. No soft drinks or cerials with milk.
It is hard to believe BUT milk is laced with hormones and antibiotics and we are drinking it. Potato chips and french fries(Google it) are the worst food for children especially with ketchup.
There is a lot to write but........ I would sugest a book    
"Allergies,  Disease in Disguise" by Carolee Bateson-Koch DC ND.

I had to read it twice to get the most important points for me. I also went to Orthomolecular Specialist and he  put me on Vitamin and Mineral supplements. My other problem I am battling is linked to my allergies...Before I read this book I was taking  antihistamine and had a puffer.And you do not want to supress your immune system because It can backfire at you later ...as it did to me.

We too have a 7-year-old with itchy feet at night. We found that the Benadryl liquid seemed to cause/worsen the problem. What helps is a past of baking soda and water, spread on the soles of clean and dry feet, then covered with socks. This is the only thing that helped.  Now we stay away from Benadryl liquid (especially ones with food dyes/colors) and Claritin liquid and it has made a big difference.

I need some help from you. My son is only 2 and half yrs old. He is having an itchy feet from last one month. No rash was visible at the beginning but from last seven days some small red acne kind of things are being visible. Though these red spots are under the skin but we can feel it when we touch the feet gently. We took him to a skin specialist and he gave Zirtec (anti allergic) syrup to take and MMS creem to rub on the feet. He also suggested to perform a routine stool test but nothing abnormality is found. Doctor suggested to continue the medicine for next 15 days. It has been 5 days my son is having the medicine. He is now little better than earlier but those red spot are still there.
My question is:
1. What could be the possible reason for this disease?
2. Is there any worm test kind of thing for stool?
3. Is there any big threat due to this itchy feet.

My daughter has the same symptoms.  She has red spots under the skin on her heels and we can feel them when we touch her feet.  She has moderate itching during the day and severe itching at night.  I took her to a dermatologist and they prescribed a steroid cream and also prednisone.  We have no idea what is causing this.  Do you?
