Nasal Irrigation Question. Am I doing it correctly?

Nasal Irrigation Question. Am I doing it correctly?

I have had postnasal drip for 7 years.  My ENT tried Flonase, Astelin and Allegra-d.  Now she says that surgery is my next option.  I decided to try nasal irrigation.  I used a baby aspirator and did it exactly as shown on a website.  When I pumped the solution into my one nostril, it did not come out the other side as the website said it should.  Am I doing something wrong?  Also, how long does it usually take to see results?  Like if there is no change in a week or so, is this not the treatment for me?  Thanks!

I use a nasal irrigator which looks more like a little watering can.  I tilt my head to the side and it always works just right.  I did try it with my 8 yo son (you can supposedly use it with children) who has pretty bad allergies.  It apparently backed up into his ear and caused him pain.  I think he was just too congested for it to be able to pass through his sinuses the right way.  Are you really plugged up?  I've never tried the bulb method, so I'm not sure what to tell you there.

Assured

I'm not congested.  I just had constant PND.  I can breathe through my nose pretty well.  I'd say I'm about 90% clear.  I tried to seal the nostril that I was squirting it into but when I did that, I felt pressure building up in there and stopped.  I just bought a Nasal irrigation system that I am going to try in a bit:-)
I'll LYK what happens!
Thanks!

I meant to say I have PND, not had PND...LOL.

I just used it and it worked!  How long until I should expect to notice a difference?  Thanks!

The electrical motor powered irrigation system is better as you can change the force/pressure of the water / solution!

Make sure you lean forwards over a sink and if there is enough pressure in the irrigator then it will naturally pass through to the other side and clears your sinuses out very well!

I have had PND for 7 years too, irrigation provides some relief and can reduce symptoms for short periods of time but its not a cure unfortunately, at least not for me anyway

i am using antihistamines, steroid nasal spray and nasal wash every day but it doesnt help much to be honest, although my ENT specialist says stick with it as it may take a few years - Nice!

i am now exploring "candida albicans" which i discovered today, type it into your search engine and see what you find it may interest you!

I sometimes get white spots on my tongue which can be a sign of candida as well as phlegm so i am looking into it. Anything is worth a try i guess!

I used to also have acid reflux stomach problems which i have had an operation to fix so thats ruled out now

Good luck

Does anyone experience ear aches after nasal irrigation? Are we supposed to blow the nose afterward or wait a while?

I just started nasal irrigation yesterday, I did 3 treatments and so far so good, I was told to blow my nose gently after each treatment and to make sure my ear never goes below my nose when Im irrigating.  This will prevent the saline solution backing up into the ear and causing infection or pain.  I have been suffering with PND for 8 years now and have just found out I am allergic to Cats in which I have two sweethearts.( how someone becomes allergic suddenly to cats, I'll never know as Ive had them my whole life with now problems!!!! )  I decided to give nasal irrigation a good try for 3 months, 2 to 3 times a day to see if it will really alleviate my symptoms.  I will post my results. I hope this helps.
All the best!

I just hold my head over the sink.  This will allow it to come out the other nasal passage and prevent it from draining back into your ears.  I have severe allergies and it has been helping tremendously.  It is difficult to get it to work though if you are severely congested.  It can't drain out of the other side.
