Neti pot

by Joalbert, Apr 30, 2007 12:00AM
I have constant pain in my sinuses, I saw on tv about the Neti pot. Does anyone know how much salt to use etc. If you have any other information that would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

All of the basics are covered in the Wikipedia article here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jala_neti

I use mine every day in the morning, and it's really helped me.  If you decide to pursue it and buy one, the pot you buy should come with a measuring spoon to make sure you add the right amount of salt to the water.  I usually add just a pinch more to my pot though, and have never had any adverse effects.  Once you get over the initial strangeness of breathing through your mouth (not so strange if your sinuses are as bad as mine) and the feeling of water going through your sinuses, the toughest part of the procedure is really making sure you get all the water out afterward.  I spend up to a minute and a half bending over, twisting, blowing gently, etc.

You don't say what your sinus pain is due to, but jala neti probably can't hurt to try.  If it doesn't help though, you should consult an ENT to see what the cause of the pain could be.

Within the last 3-4 months my sinuses have started audibly popping.  Others can hear it also.  I am not congested and breathe fine.  My voice has also become a bit more nassally than before.  This popping is annoying and somewhat embarrasing especially when I am close to someone and they pop (sounds like false teeth clicking...no offence fo anyone).  Any idea what  might be going on.  No pain or anything.  I did fall about a year ago and hit my cheek rather hard.   Has anyone heard of this.
