Omnicef Allergy

My 23 month old daughter was prescribed Omnicef to treat an ear infection.  After three days on the medication I began to notice red patches of bumps that I thought were bites.  I later learned that these were hives due an allergic reaction to the Omnicef.  The Dr. precribed Augmentin in it's place.  The pharmacist called to warn me that the Augmentin may also cause a reaction and because she still has hives popping up everywhere we may not be able to tell if she is having a reaction to the Augmentin. He also mentioned that she may continue to have hives for years after the medication was taken. Has anyone run into the same scenario?

Hi,

The hives should go away once the medication is stopped if they were due to the medication.

Consult with your doctor before starting any other medication and also see whether a consultation with an allergy specialist is required.

Apply calamine lotion on the rashes and see if it helps.

Has the ear infection resolved or is still persistent?

Do let us know how she is doing and if you have any doubts.

Hope this helps.

Good luck.
