Rambutan

Can anyone post a citation for me that distiguishes rambutan as the nut it is and not a fruit as is commonly called.  I have my one allergy site and several ER doctors that have said it is a nut, as well as a few people who have said they have always known it was a nut and nut and not a fruit.

Apparently I did not know this and purchased some at a store where it was labeled as a fruit.  My daughter, who has a tree-nut allergy, reacted badly to it and I had to take her to the ER.

I will be presenting my compilation of info to the store's corporate offices who so far have rejected my report since it conflicts with their Thailand supplier.

Hello,

A true food allergy is a response where the body's immune system overreacts to the protein portion of a normal food, for example, the proteins found in peanuts or tree nuts. The allergic reaction produces unpleasant symptoms for some people and sometimes life-threatening symptoms for others.

Unfortunately, there are currently no cures for food allergies. Therefore, the only way one  can prevent a reaction is to avoid foods that contain a given allergen. After suspected ingestion of a food allergen, epinephrine injection (or adrenaline) can be administered to counter some of the released histamine, giving the victim time to get to a hospital for proper treatment.

You can find more information about tree nuts allergy and the different tree nuts causing allergy from the following websites:

Hope it helps.Take care and pls do keep me posted on how your daughter is  doing.

Hello,

Rambustan is a nut and not a fruit as generally thought. It is a member of the family Sapindaceae, which also contains two related species lychee and longan (Euphoira longana).  Their closest non-tropical "cousins" are the walnut, cashew nut and pistachio nut of the Anacardiaceae family. If your daughter is having tree nut allergy then allergy to rambustan is also possible. This is called cross reactivity.

You can log on to the following website to know more about this:

Hope it helps.Take care and pls do keep me posted on how your daughter is doing.
