Scared to do anything b/c of angioedema

hello.  I have been reading all the posts and alot say to take aspirin or ibuprofen.  I have done so much research and aspirin and NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflamatory drugs) are the number one cause of angioedema.

Anyway, I had eye and lip swelling as a child and again about ten years ago when I was in my twenties now I am 38 and the swelling started again.  It started with hives in April/May when I started taking soma (muscle relaxer) and then after a month or so my lip swelled up so I stopped the soma.  I then started doxepin for anxiety and still hives and swelling.  After numerous ER visits I stopped the doxepin (which has strong H1 and H2 properties so I am baffled at why it would be doxepin) but anyway I have been taking atarax at night and it seems to be working.  In my twenties I took allegra for a while and it helped but recently I took a clariton and it made my lip swelling worse.  I have been tested for hereditary angioedema and it is negative.  I have an allergy to pork, milk, soy, hazelnut, grass, feathers, aspirin, and dust.

Im having a hard time coping I dont go anywhere unless there is a hospital nearby b/c i am scared my throat will swell up.  I have an epi-pen, prednisone, and atarax, and albutoral and I dont go anywhere without and my throat never swelled up but I know all reactions are different.  I worked in a hospital for ten years and I recently lost my job I can only work in a hospital because of my health anxiety so I have to find a job in a hospital (im an xray tech) before my unemployment runs out.

I have learned to deal with the fact that angioedema has taken over my life.  I really think the soma started it all and it takes a long time to get out of my system.  im just falling apart i see my allergist in a few weeks but like they told me ten years ago it idiopathic.  i cant accept that i cant take a chance of maybe driving one day with my kids in the car and my throat happens to swell up i cant accept the fact that it just might happen so i dont go anywhere and i live six blocks away from the hospital or sometimes if i dont feel good i will go sit in the parking lot of the hospital.  I know that is sick!!!  I cant help it im scared it never happened but what if my throat swells up my lips and eyes and chin did before so im scared.

also it happens mostly in the morning when i wake up WHY  WHY   WHY???

Hello and hope you are doing well.

Understand your anxiety. But normally, during the course of evolution from a baby to an adult, we develop a mechanism by which we desensitize ourselves to all the materials we are exposed to. But sometimes, the desensitization may not be perfect and we develop allergic reactions to those few substances. This is what happened in your case. On exposure to the allergen, an Immunologic (IgE) or a non-immunologic reaction is set in process, which ultimately releases histamine, which acts at the peripheral receptors, resulting in allergic reactions, which can range from rashes to anaphylaxis.

The aim of the therapy is identification and removal of trigger factor. It is the most important and the only effective long-term therapy. To prevent the allergic reaction, the allergen needs to be avoided.  It may help to maintain a food dairy and keep monitoring your symptoms. This will help to narrow the search and avoid them. Environmental triggers or seasonal or diurnal variations triggers may be difficult to avoid. But being aware can help to avoid the same. Just keep monitoring for other sources of allergens. Further allergic testing may be worth looking into, as it may help to desensitize you.

Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
