Severe dry cough attacks

Its been 2 weeks that I am suffering from cough. Its started with runny nose and got converted into dry cough. I get about 6 to 7 severe attacks which last for a min or two. I think the reason is pollution as I went cycling in an area where there is a lot of truck traffic. How long will this last. What is the right medication. I tried nebullisation and it helped me for sometime...please help. This is the first time it has happen. I mean that severe.

Your symptoms can be due to allergic rhinitis or hay fever. You can take OTC antihistaminics like Benadryl or Claritin. Longer-acting antihistamines are available by prescription. They cause less drowsiness and can work just as well. These medications include fexofenadine (Allegra), and cetirizine (Zyrtec).

You can also use nasal corticosteroid sprays like nasocort or flonase. Decongestants may also be helpful in reducing symptoms such as nasal congestion, but they should not be used for long periods. Cromolyn sodium is a nasal spray (Nasalcrom) for treating hay fever.

If the symptoms persist then pls consult a physician.
